EXTENDED DEADLINE!!!! We have also chosen to open this call to all artists. This exhibition remains anchored as an opportunity to highlight and celebrate Latin artists and perspectives, we remain deeply committed to centering and honoring the cultural traditions, stories, and significance of Día de los Mu***os.
Due to the community response, we are expanding the call to welcome artists of all backgrounds to submit artwork inspired by themes of remembrance, ancestry, family, celebration, loss, and the connections between those who are here and those who have passed on.
We encourage artists to thoughtfully engage with the meaning and traditions of Día de los Mu***os and to approach the theme with respect, care, and intention.
We hope this exhibition becomes a meaningful gathering of perspectives, artwork, and community, creating space for conversation, remembrance, and connection across cultures and generations.

Entre Dos Mundos (Between Two Worlds) explores the delicate intersection of life and death. It highlights the profound connection between the spiritual and physical realms, celebrating the lives of those who have passed away. As Día de los Mu***os approaches, this is a crucial time when the spirits of our loved ones travel from the spirit world to the living world to reunite with friends and family. This exhibition aims to showcase a dynamic blend of how artists interpret this theme while honoring their own unique traditions.

Entre Dos Mundos explora la delicada intersección entre la vida y la muerte. Destaca la profunda conexión entre el reino espiritual y el físico, celebrando las vidas de aquellos que han fallecido. Cuando se acercan los Días de los Mu***os, este es un tiempo crucial en que los espíritus de nuestros seres queridos viajan del mundo más allá al mundo de los vivos para reunirse con amigos y familiares. Confluence Center: A Home for Nonprofit Events (Western Montana’s Home for Nonprofit Events) art program Torrents is thrilled to present a magical evening of art, music, and community! This month we are hosting our favorite artist collective VonCommon Studios for theiVonCommon Studios!

VonCommon is a nonprofit communal art studio helping artists create art and community since 2011. Besides providing low cost studio space, VonCommon has always excelled in creating a safe communal place where artists can find each other and thrive. Many of Missoula’s favorite artists found their roots between VonCommon’s walls, and this year we want to celebrate all the joy this special collective has brought to life.

Come see a variety of artists there to support VonCommon:
Abi Gontarek, April Dearduff, Ashley Huotari, Brooke O’Shay Sheridan, Courtney Blazon, Gretel Stoudt, Jennifer Baylis, Julee Hall, Kent Means, ladypajama, Maia Hangas, Nikci King, Stacey Klocke and more!

Opening reception will be First Friday, September 4th, 5-8pm at the Confluence Center at 119 W Main St, Missoula, MT, and will also feature DJ Madhatter! Then be sure to stick around for the Afterparty from 8-11pm held in Confluence Center’s back patio area. Celebration! will remain on display through September 4th and can be seen by appointment through the Confluence Center: 406-926-6526. There will also be a Closing Reception held on Friday, September 25th, 6-8pm.

“Earth’s Bones” Group Exhibit Harnessing the Healing Power of Nature features Kassidy Malcolm.

With a lens focused on the world’s natural wonders, Kassidy Malcolm intertwines her passions for
photography and the outdoors. Based in Missoula, Montana, her journey began in Washington state, where
towering mountains and vibrant sunsets first sparked her creative spirit. Kassidy’s connection to nature
fuels her work, as she believes people are deeply connected to the earth’s rivers, forests, and wild
landscapes. This inspires her to capture fleeting moments that will never occur again.

“This body of work is a celebration of the natural beauty that exists all around us—from iconic national
parks to lesser-known hidden gems tucked away from the crowds. Each photograph captures a fleeting
moment in time, preserving landscapes that inspire wonder, reflection, and a deeper connection to the
world around us.
Through these images, I hope to share not only the beauty of these places but also the importance of
slowing down and appreciating them. In a fast-paced world, nature offers us moments of peace,
perspective, and awe. These photographs serve as reminders to seek adventure, embrace the outdoors,
and cherish the landscapes that make our planet so extraordinary.
My hope is that viewers are inspired to explore, protect, and celebrate these wild places, recognizing both
their beauty and their value for generations to come.”

“Earth’s Bones” Group Exhibit Harnessing the Healing Power of Nature features Madeleine Tucker.

Maddie Tucker was born and raised in Missoula. She has always found peace in movement, and tries to
infuse her artwork with the electricity that she feels when she’s in motion, or when she’s observing the
movements of the world around her.

“My artwork originates from my experience with a landscape, not just the visual facts of it. Through my
paintings I attempt to convey the sense of tranquility, reverence or even foreboding that I felt when I was
moving through these places. I love what it feels like to be outside in the midst of changing weather and
an evolving landscape, and I love painting because it allows me to capture and share those feelings.”

“Earth’s Bones” Group Exhibit Harnessing the Healing Power of Nature features Leela Francis.

After a 30-year career in dance and the exploration of consciousness, I found my way back to the visual
arts in 2020.
In my early twenties, I had the privilege of studying fine art and art history in Montreal, Canada, and
Florence, Italy exposing me to both the intuitive aspects of art and the discipline of classical realism. The
rich use of color, form, and allegory that captivated me in Renaissance painting in Italy continues to inspire
my work today, now woven together with a contemplative, body-centered approach.
My years working in the healing arts, expressive arts, and eco-therapy have added depth and texture to my
creative practice. Through painting, I explore the relationship between the natural world, inner experience,
and the quiet presence that emerges when we slow down enough to truly see, feel and listen.

“The essence of this body of work is my enchantment with the energy of trees. Forest Bathing, aka, Shinrin
Yoku in Japanese, is the practice of immersing oneself in the forest using all our senses to connect with
the healing powers of nature. By communing through sounds, smells and textures, we foster an
experience and state of peace and wellbeing. Trekking in forests on 5 continents and working for 15 years
as an eco-therapy guide have offered me the tremendous privilege of journeying deeply with trees. My
forest paintings are an effort to harness this healing energy and its gifts on a 2 dimensional surface.”

“Earth’s Bones” Group Exhibit Harnessing the Healing Power of Nature features Erynn McNeill.

Erynn McNeill is an artist, botanist, and scientific illustrator. While obtaining their Bachelor of Science in
Biology they worked throughout the backcountry of Montana, Idaho and Alaska tracking animals and
recording plant species until the fall of 2020 when forced isolation brought back an old love of creating
art. They created Up Moss Creek Studio as a habitat for experimentation where they combine their
knowledge of ecology from these wilderness experiences with inspirations from sci-fi, Celtic folklore,
medieval bestiaries and botanical illustration to create unique dark naturalism acrylic paintings and
jewelry. While their many inspirations give their work an air of fantasy, they purposefully highlight little
known and endangered species from across the Pacific Northwest with the hope to educate and inspire
conservation. They are currently based in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana where they share a home with
their partner Brandon, dog Dagwood, and cat Orion.

“Paintings pulled from my memories. From photos taken deep in a cedar forest, a top dry open hills, a long
muddy creek beds. My hands and knees pressed into soil, my eyes with the flowers, the mosses and
lichens and mushrooms as tall ferns tickle my shoulders. Deep in the woods I am alone and it feels like a
dream. The moon is in the night sky. The stars shine bright. On the other side of the meadow stands a wolf
of mycelium webs. A loon prince calls from still dark water. A unicorn rests on the edge of a mire. And for
a brief moment, the wings of a praying mantis look like a fairy. If I lay here will antlers grow from my skull?
Will my bones moss over? Will carnivorous plants reach their tendrils for me? Would I accept the wakening
of my dreams? Would I welcome it? The returning.“

“Earth’s Bones”
Group Exhibit Harnessing the Healing Power of Nature features Casey Burton

Casey Burton was born and raised on Chicago’s South Side. She earned her BFA in ceramics from the
University of Iowa in 2019 and continued her studies with post-baccalaureate work at the University of
Kansas. She later completed an artist residency at the Cobb Mountain Art & Ecology Project in Northern
California, experiences that further deepened her connection to body and land.
In 2024, Casey received her MFA from Penn State University. She was an adjunct professor at Saint Xavier
University in Chicago and is currently an artist-in-residence at The Clay Studio of Missoula.

“My idea of a vessel has evolved to be a place that is activated by my body- where my energy is spilled into
and morphed with material.

My work intertwines care, physicality, and dualities of the eternal and ephemeral.
Plants, with their undeniable life force, can stimulate the same chemical that bonds mother and child. This
profound connection compels me to surround myself with nature and anchor my work in a practice of
healing and reciprocity.
By allowing the environment to interact with my work, I embrace impermanence. The material’s gradual
decay and disappearance invite reflection on cycles of transformation and release.

Ceramics, like Earth’s bones, capture a passing experience—concretizing a moment in time.
By shaping materials with my body, I mourn past selves and memories while celebrating the rewilding of
self, an act of renewal.”
