Red Door Studios offers classes and lessons focused on realistic drawing and painting techniques, with a strong emphasis on figurative subjects and portraiture. All instruction is provided by Lacey Lewis, a recognized figurative painter who has been teaching her craft for 10 years. Lewis describes her teaching methods as "Classical Atelier Inspired," combining elements of traditional techniques wi

th more contemporary concepts. She believes that incorporating a variety of philosophies in her teaching gives her students multiple tools to choose from when solving visual problems. In addition to private lessons, semi-private group lessons, and classes, Red Door Studios also offers drop-in figurative life drawing sessions that are open to the public.

Learn to Draw For Real!
When you first start making art, you want to skip to the fun stuff: finishing the details, playing with color, placing lots of highlights. But pretty soon you realize that when those foundational skills are missing, it’s impossible to get the results you really want.

This class will teach you how to move past tracing, gridding, and projecting so that you can actually draw portraits yourself!

Clouds are such gorgeous abstract shapes! They can be tricky because they’re subtle and sometimes translucent, but at the end of the day they’re essentially fluffy spheres.

Charcoal is a very forgiving drawing medium that allows many changes as you go along. This brings opportunities to take a more dynamic and flexible approach to proportion and bolder shading options. These methods are faster than those used for graphite but require greater skill to execute.

That’s why in my portrait drawing classes, I teach two approaches: one for graphite which is easier for newer students, and one for charcoal which is flexible but challenging.
