Art History Fact Time 📸

Do you know the story behind this famous photograph?

The image, known as “V-J Day in Times Square,” was taken by photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt in New York City’s Times Square on August 15, 1945, the day Japan’s surrender in World War II was announced.

At first glance, it looks like a joyful kiss between a couple celebrating the end of the war. In reality, however, the two had NEVER met before.

Greta Zimmer Friedman, the woman in the photograph, later said “That wasn’t my choice. He suddenly came up to me, grabbed me, and kissed me.”

George Mendonsa, the sailor in the photo, was reportedly intoxicated and caught up in the excitement of the celebrations, kissing multiple women in the crowd.

Over the years, this iconic image has come to represent both the joy of the war’s end and, more recently, conversations about consent and how history can be viewed from different perspectives.

The photograph is now part of the LIFE Picture Collection, managed by Getty Images. Since it’s a historic photographic print, it’s rarely included in permanent museum exhibitions. However, you can occasionally view original prints at limited-time special exhibitions.

Photographs capture moments…

Time to learn a new art history fact📝

Did you know artists once painted with REAL MUMMIES!?

A pigment called “Mummy Brown” was made by grinding the remains of ancient Egyptian mummies and mixing the powder with oil and resin to create a rich brown paint.

The story began in the Middle Ages, when Europeans believed powdered mummies known as “mummia” had healing properties and sold them in pharmacies as medicine. By the early 19th century, this practice had largely disappeared. However, artists had discovered that the powder produced a unique warm brown pigment, which became known as Mummy Brown.

“Liberty Leading the People” by Delacroix in 1830 that is rumoured to have been painted with mummy brown.

Thankfully, modern paints no longer contain mummies 😮‍💨

Have you ever heard of Mummy Brown before?

Time for an ART HISTORY lesson! 📚🖼️
Are you familiar with the Realism Movement?

REALISM MOVEMENT
From 1840 to late 19th in France 🇫🇷
The Realism movement portrayed nature and everyday life in a truthful and detailed manner, rejecting imaginative idealization. Realist artists sought to depict modern life and society as they truly were, with a particular focus on the middle and working classes.

FAMOUS ARTIST🧑‍🎨
Jean-François Millet (1814–1875)
Millet found dignity, virtue, and even spirituality in manual labor. One of his most famous works, The Gleaners, depicts rural women gathering leftover grain after the harvest, honoring the resilience and hard work of the rural working class.

First Steps, after Millet by Vincent van Gogh🖼️
This heartwarming scene of a mother helping her child take their first steps symbolizes love, growth, and the enduring bond between family members.

Which art movement should we share next???

Hello there! Meet our next Suite 1 Gallery member, Walter Piehl!

Born in 1942 on a farm in Marion, North Dakota, Walter developed a lifelong connection to the American West. In the 1960s, when his father began producing rodeos, Walter became deeply interested in the rodeo world. For more than 40 years, he served as a crow’s nest announcer, watching the powerful movements of riders, horses, and bulls from above. Those experiences became a source of inspiration for his artwork.

Walter’s works capture the excitement and energy of the rodeo arena through bucking horses, twisting bulls, and swirling ropes, all expressed with bold, dynamic brushstrokes.

In addition, Walter taught at Minot State University for over 47 years, inspiring generations of students and sharing his creativity, and passion for art.

Stop by Suite 1 Gallery to experience Walter’s energetic and expressive works in person!
