A strange time to experience remnants of the artworld we once knew but WR was lucky to have Sheila Regan stop by, who in turn wrote a lovely article chosen as a Critic’s Pick on Art Forum’s website.

Sam Dirck’s small painting Untitled (all works cited, 2020) evokes a glam pop portrait, a visage of Ziggy Stardust sheen dappled with crude globs of red, yellow, and blue paint. A warped checker pattern defines the area where the forehead and eyes might be, and glorious thin pink lips sit below. T...

Waiting Room's location is temporarily closed to the public to preserve safety but we are still virtually showing Boredom Fantasy Mimesis. Check out our website for high quality images of the artworks in the show.

A short overview:

Positioning himself with a set of conditions and moments in an abstract narrative, Sam Dirck tempers chance and intention to generate varying expressions of surface texture on which the body or land is inferred, and the unconscious made perceptible.

The possibilities of layered paint and plaster casting in his first solo show, Boredom Fantasy Mimesis, oozes with Dirck's distinctive vocabulary of expression. A nod to a his dedicated exploration of the dimensional grid, his marks take on sweeping, continuous linearities in compositions, while other works emphasize traditional hard-edge and dimensional painting.

Boredom Fantasy Mimesis is a collection of work that pushes to occupy the space between the pictoriality of painting and the spatiality of sculpture; merging the two with elements of abstract design. This show exudes with playful interjections found imbedded in the inherent rhythms of mark, gesture, color and symbol. Each piece is rooted in the familiar but infiltrated by a carnal use of “play,” an utterly interpreted—nonprescriptive—element to the work.

We recognize that these are uncertain times and safety is our best precaution. No matter where you live, and whether you are traveling or not, it’s worth repeating the World Health Organization’s advice for protecting yourself and others: Wash your hands frequently with soap and/or alcohol-based sanitizers; avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; cover your mouth or nose when you sneeze or cough; and maintain distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. Of course, if you have a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing yourself, seek medical attention.

Waiting Room is now living in Lowertown, Saint Paul! Our new location has allowed us to open up an intimate showcase vault called backroom, where we display three pieces from an artist, curator, or collaborative team!

Currently backroom is showcasing the artist August Schultz (they/them). August is a Minneapolis photographer turned printmaker. They reference historically q***r methods of cruising, coding oneself, and disseminating information through printing on lightweight paper, clothing items, and handkerchiefs.

We would appreciate it if you head on over to backroom and gave it a like! We want to promote artwork from artists you wouldn't normally find at the galleries or institution here in the cities. This platform runs on uplifting the voices of the community that are often left unheard. With your support we can help empower these artists!

Thank you everyone. We look forward to introducing you to a calvary of the latest personalities.
