Dane Hodges Ceramics My ceramic work is directly influenced by the supple nature of the human form and the rich color palette found in nature.

Fullness and breathe of, and restraints on the body manifest in my work in different ways as my work progresses. Currently, I am drawn to elegant and plump forms with implied restraints in the use of lobing, which is the process of creating linear recesses on the surface. This lobing acts as both optical restraints and a sort of contour line of varied weight. Nature influences my work, somewhat fo

rmally, however heavily when choosing color palette. Nature, flora specifically, has the most rich, natural color combinations. The rustic, varied greens of the sepal coupled with the contrasts of the bright petal create a perfectly alluring object. That allure and sensual feel is intrinsically compelling. I relate with the tangible nature of pottery. The central draw is the tactility of the making process; at every step, my bare hands create most every mark. In this, the overall experience becomes transcendent and a relationship is formed with each piece. Furthering this tactility, I adore the notion that someone then gets to have, use, and from their own relationship with the very same pot. In this, functionality becomes essential. In firing my work, I use an electric kiln in oxidation. The nature of this method leads to shallow, but vibrant colors. It is my goal to create a surface that captures this vibrancy of oxidation, coupled with the depth achieved in more atmospheric firings. To accomplish this, I layer multiple glazes, applied with an airbrush, and use a technique called down firing in order to allow for slow cooling and crystal growth.

Finally got the other clay I needed to commence glaze testing. Here are the first round of test tiles. Trying to get the same feel of my pots in these and I kind of like em’ as little objects.

The clay is a bit darker than I’m used to, but hopefully it won’t make much of a difference with the glazes I’m trying out…the other clay I just got is going even darker. Hopefully have tests done in the next week or two.

Well…after a break, some conversations with other potters, and doing more testing this combo of clay and glaze, it has proven to be too problematic (at least for now). In the coming weeks I’ll be testing a new clay body, one more on the way, and some new glazes. My general aesthetic will stay similar, but maybe some new colors, matte surfaces, combos…who knows!

What is certain, is that this combo will probably not exist at least for the near future. It has served me well and helped get me to where I am now. Hopefully you all will like what comes next. I feel optimistic, excited, and a little scared. Fingers crossed.

It’ll be hard to say goodbye(for now), but hopefully there will be better things ahead! Maybe do a final sale soon after some shows finish up.

Thanks to for taking this great picture of his new mug in use! Love seeing them in their new spaces, especially with some killer latte art! This was another favorite from the summer and I’m glad it’s getting some good use!

Well…this has been a fight! I began glazing work and found that every pot that came out of the kiln was covered in blisters and pinholes. I tried all the tricks I knew, reached out to amazing friends and potters for advice, to no avail. Some pots worked in a re-fire…but I was operating at roughly 50% loss. I kept trying and not my odds have gotten slightly better, but it’s looking like the sun is setting on this glaze combo…or my Clay, or ME!!! That’s to be determined after the summer.

I will still be at the but will sadly have less pottery than I had hoped. Please some on out and support, trying to make the last three weeks from h@ll worth it!

My pitchers get dry from trimming, water etching and altering which makes pulling spouts tricky. I like to wait until after all of this, because each spout is a response to the previous alterations. Because of the dryness, I simply take a damp piece of paper towel, lay it over the area and wrap up the pot for a while (usually 15-30 minutes). Then remove and start pulling the spout! Obviously this only helps to a certain point of dryness. If your pot is too dry and/or your paper towel too wet, you run the risk of cracking/deterioration from rapid absorption and expansion of the clay.

I know I’ve been quiet lately…ceramics if a fickle beast. More to come on those time consuming struggles.
