This past week, I got to start in on a new creative process with a group of people I truly love. Any time I get to spend in the studio with them is a gift! We’re working on a new piece for the show this 7/30 - 8/1 at the , exploring physical and mental time travel.

I’ve had to do a LOT of academic research to dive in, and frankly, it’s been a joy to immerse myself in academic writing that’s NOT about dance. It’s been a long time since I’ve done that, and it’s been FASCINATING!

Highlight: I’m teaching a public class today! I wanted to post today about the streak of public school residencies I’m in the middle of, but have been so busy just teaching them that I don’t have good photos! Because it’s (very tangentially) related (insomuch as it’s also a young person learning moves, so really, a thinly-veiled excuse to share a bit about my baby babe), here’s some video of my little Jovi just starting to walk this week!

We’re VERY hands-off about sharing images and video of our little ones publicly, so another dispatch like this isn’t likely to come again soon. I hope you enjoy the doofy grin and thrilled vibes she’s displaying just as much as we do! It’s a good reminder that, no matter our age, we should all seek joy in movement :)

Three Fridays apart, two very different, yet somehow similar dancing (or at least dance-adjacent) Erinns!

Three Fridays ago I was in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, getting my dance on nightly to some of the absolute best jazz music one could possibly stumble across. It lit me up and filled my cup, personally and professionally.

This morning, I just got done with my normal Friday routine at the gym, still with a big doofy smile on my face because I legitimately love my time here. It may not be dancing itself, but it’s the support my postpartum dancing body needs, and it makes me feel SO. GOOD.

Pic #1 sums up what February was: chaotic and joyful, with ‘s big show at the Ordway, Mardi Gras and RS’ tour of that show to . Pic #2 sums up what I’m hoping March will be: more routine and joyful in its own right. This month, RS recovers from the show, I continue my work making a new piece with students, I engage in a couple and self-booked elementary school residencies, keep my class on track and pull out the Nerdette garb as the season starts. Listing all this makes it seem like a lot, but it’s (mostly) during my normal working hours and surrounded by normal daily routines :)

I’m grateful for this dancing-artist-mamaparent-wholeasshuman life, in all its chaos, mundanity (is that a word?) and JOY.

The forms we work in - jazz and jazz-related dance and music styles - were born out of responses to systemic oppression as tools of resistance. We recognize we are in a marathon here, not a sprint: we see your resistance efforts and want to extend a special discount to all Community Organizers in need of a moment to refuel your soul.
