A year or so ago this guitar was headed to the dumpster. It was unplayable, dirty and didn’t feel like part of my future. I was about to discard it when my pal stepped in and said he would take it. I didn’t think much of it at the time. Last week it made its way back to my house, completely refurbished.
In Japan, there is a practice called Kintsugi, where broken pottery is fixed with lacquer mixed with gold or silver. The piece is mended back to life in a way that still shows the cracks that broke but creates a new version of the piece that is, in some ways, more beautiful than the original.
That’s how I look at this guitar. It still has its history, some of the blemishes of the past are still there…but it plays and sounds better than it ever did.
I always listen to this song on New Year’s Day. In fact, the line “life without revision will silence our souls” is tattooed on my arm. Maybe 2026 is a revision for some of us. Maybe it’s picking up the pieces and gluing them back together in a way that gives us peace and hope for the future. Whatever it is for you, I wish you a great start to 2026.
