Happy Monday lovelies!
-
Last week I shipped a piece called "Advocate" to Columbus, Ohio to be featured in a small gallery at an event called Night of Jubilee (hosted by my friends at )
-
As many of you know, The Mint Bee was founded after learning that a dear friend of mine, Katie, was trafficked from my small Ohio hometown. Advocating for victims of sex trafficking is the heartbeat at The Mint Bee! Because this topic is so close to my heart, it was deeply inspired by my personal faith. (If you would like to read the faith based explanation of this piece, I have posted it on my personal Instagram .)
-
At The Mint Bee, we believe that art has the ability to speak volumes. It is always my dream that my art, though often inspired by personal perspectives and experiences, can speak something unique to everyone who sees it!
This being said, I believe that this piece communicates "advocacy" regardless of your faith background! Even if it's simply because of the bizarre mediums used.
-
The subject of the piece (a mountain scene and hands reaching) are common and easily identifiable to us, almost like the word "advocacy" in everyday vocabulary.
However, the materials used are unique: scrap plywood, book pages, map, charcoal, and tin foil. For this piece I used mediums that you wouldn't normally see in "fine art." I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
-
I believe this piece parallels the multiple ways in which we can advocate for those who are trafficked. It doesn't always look how we would expect it to, and that's great!
Not all of us can be Liam Neeson and play the lead for a IRL version of Taken, and thank goodness!

In order to successfully combat human trafficking a lot of moving pieces and parts are required. A clock isn't merely a face and some hands, it's chock-full of a million moving pieces and parts! Advocating for human trafficking is the same, it requires all of us partnering together to see change happen!
If you're interested in getting involved with advocating for human trafficking, start by shopping The Mint Bee, and tell your friends, too!!
