This painting arrived to MACC falling off the stretcher! It had several tears in the top right quadrant and there were overall deformations across the surface. As part of treatment the entire surface was cleaned and the canvas was edge lined and restretched onto a custom new stretcher. The tears were repaired using a thread-by-thread technique utilizing new linen threads to bridge gaps and a canvas insert was applied to the support loss in the top right corner. This fascinating painting can now be enjoyed for years to come!

A quick look at how to make sturgeon glue! This adhesive is commonly used for consolidation and tear repair on paintings. The material solubilized with warm, de-ionized water and sieved. It’s then dotted onto Mylar and dried for future use!

The Midwest Art Conservation Center is pleased to announce that Tova Brandt has stepped into the role of Executive Director. Colin Turner will be retiring from MACC after 24 years of successful leadership.

Tova Brandt brings over two decades of work as a museum professional, both as a curator and director. She most recently was Executive Director of the Museum of Danish America (MoDA) after serving as Curator of Exhibitions for that museum for many years. Prior to MoDA, Tova was a Curator for Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum. Tova grew up in Minneapolis, attended Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, and completed her graduate studies in the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture at the University of Delaware.

Under Colin Turner’s direction, MACC has grown from a small regional organization to a nationally recognized leader in the field. He helped champion community perspectives in collections care and broader access to professional opportunities in the field of art conservation. “This has been my passion for over 2 decades and I couldn’t be more pleased to have Tova Brandt lead MACC into the future,” said Colin. “Her support for MACC’s mission and the staff’s exceptional abilities means we are now poised for even greater growth and service to the field.”

Tova Brandt previously served as a board member for MACC, as well as being a museum client for art conservation, museum assessments, and workshops. “I am honored to continue Colin’s work to sustain MACC as place of excellence, access, and preservation,” said Tova. “I have admired the work of MACC’s staff team for many years and look forward to leading the organization into the future.”
