"How art behind bars could change prisons across South Dakota..."

We were delighted to see this headline on the front page of the Argus Leader, a local newspaper in Sioux Falls, SD. Thank you to reporter Trent Abrego for capturing the process and performance of our residency, I Believe / The South Dakota Prison Project. With visual artist Ariadne Albright, we facilitated an arts & movement residency that culminated in a sharing of movement stories and a mural created by the men.

This project was made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts as well as the support of the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls.

Today marks the end of our second week in residence at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. Suzanne Costello is directing I Believe / The South Dakota Prison Project, a three-week residency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. We have worked daily with 25 men who have shared the many challenges of living in incarceration along with the resilience that keeps them getting up each day and finding modes of creative expression. With each day, the sense of community has deepened among the group. We look forward to next Saturday, April 29th, when these artists will share their work with the wider Sioux Falls community through a performance.
