He founded this theater in 1976. He produced August Wilson's first professional play. He has directed at the Kennedy Center, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and the Guthrie. He has won the Obie. And now he is back on this stage.
Lou Bellamy built Penumbra from a CETA grant and a conviction that Black stories deserved a professional stage in St. Paul. He went on to produce 39 world premieres, to direct August Wilson's work more than any director in the world, and to build the largest African American theater in the United States.
This May, he returns to the stage he built to direct one of the most powerful plays Wilson ever wrote.
Some things are worth waiting for.
Be in the room for this. Tickets at link in bio.
