From 1946 to today: 80 Years of women’s right to vote in Italy.

In Italy, women were granted the right to vote in 1945, but they voted for the first time in 1946, during the institutional referendum that led to the birth of the Republic.

It was a very important historical moment, because for the first time women officially participated in the political life of the country, helping to decide Italy’s future after the war.

Festa della Liberazione (Liberation Day) - April 25th

Every year on April 25th, Italy celebrates La Festa della Liberazione (Liberation Day) to commemorate Italy's liberation from Nazi-Fascism, celebrate anti-fascism as one of the founding values of the Republican Constitution of 1948, and honor the Italian Resistance movement and all those who fought and gave their lives for democracy and Italy's freedom alongside the Allied Forces.

The Italian Film Festival of Minneapolis / St. Paul and The Italian Cultural Center, in partnership with the historic Heights Theater, proudly presented a special screening of Stromboli, directed by Roberto Rossellini, on March 20 in celebration of the Italian Cultural Center’s 20th Anniversary.

Following the remarkable success of the Italian Film Festival’s 17th edition (February 26–March 1), which featured 10 contemporary films and 5 classic masterpieces, including a special selection Honoring the Twin Cities, and drew many sold-out screenings, the screening of Stromboli offered audiences a unique opportunity to continue celebrating Italian cinema.

Stromboli holds a special place in the Italian Cultural Center’s history, it was the very first film ever screened.

We were honored to welcome distinguished guests for this special screening. Richard Peña, Emeritus Professor at Columbia University and Director Emeritus of the New York Film Festival, introduced Stromboli, offered a post-screening analysis, and led a Q&A with the audience.

Although we were not able to feature a pre-recorded video by Alessandro Rossellini as originally planned, we were grateful to share a beautiful written message from him, which was read to the audience by Tommaso Cammarano, Artistic Director of the Italian Film Festival of Minneapolis / St. Paul.

We were also thrilled to start the evening with a live organ performance by Alec Watson II dpcd

Grazie mille to everyone who joined us for the 17th Italian Film Festival of Minneapolis / St. Paul. Siete un pubblico straordinario, what an amazing audience you are! You showed up in large numbers proving wrong every prediction of low attendance based on what we had just lived through, you filled more than 2,200 seats, sharing laughs, tears, and baci e abbracci (kisses and hugs) with us along the way. This year, more than ever before, through your presence and your passionate interactions with our guests, in person or online, you not only showed your commitment to the festival or the excitement of discovering it for the very first time, but you showed palpable and beautiful commitment to each other and to our cities especially.

Take our anonymous survey! We want to hear your feedback so we can keep improving.
