From The team that brought you the horror masterpiece RE-ANIMATOR followed it up one year later with another H.P. Lovecraft-inspired body horror classic FROM BEYOND.

Starring Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton as well as fellow horror legend Ken Foree (DAWN OF THE DEAD), Stuart Gordon's sophomore splatter-fest starts with a pineal gland experiment and ends with wall-to-wall interdimensional mutants getting mutilated. Come celebrate 40 years of FROM BEYOND - no splash zone required.

This week at The Main!

Starting this week:
BUDDY
Starts Thu, Aug 27
Remember BUDDY—the bright orange unicorn and star of that classic childrens' television show who brought joy and life lessons into your living room?
Inside the colorful world of "It's Buddy!", a group of children spend their days singing, dancing, and helping Buddy spread happiness. But when one child refuses to play along, Buddy is not pleased and cracks begin to appear in this seemingly perfect world.

ECHOES IN THE NIGHT: THE SEARCH FOR JACOB WETTERLING
Starts Fri, Aug 28
Chris Newberry’s film was the 2nd highest rated film at MSPIFF45!
In 1989, on a quiet road in rural Minnesota, 11-year-old Jacob Wetterling is abducted by a masked gunman. The case remains shrouded in mystery for decades, until a courageous sexual-assault survivor, a citizen journalist, and Jacob’s unshakable parents demand action. After the case reaches a devastating conclusion, they are all left to question what “closure” really means.

FRANZ
Starts Fri, Aug 28
Award-winning director Agnieszka Holland embarks on her most ambitious project to date, a biopic of the iconic 20th-century Czech writer Franz Kafka. Conceived as a kaleidoscopic mosaic, the film follows the imprint Kafka left on the world from his birth in 19th-century Prague to his death in post-WW1 Vienna. Franz gives audiences a brand new perspective on the life of the man behind the literary giant.

CUBA AFTER CASTRO
Wed, Aug 26 • 7pm
Post-screening Live Virtual Q&A with Director Abby Martin
Presented by the Minnesota Cuba Committee

Cuba After Castro delivers the definitive portrait of Miguel Díaz-Canel, Cuba’s first leader born after the Revolution. Through this unprecedented in-depth interview we see a vision of revolutionary Cuba suppressed in the west: a nation of collective values and defiance in the face of constant threats from the United States. The film chronicles Diaz-Canel’s formation as an unexpected successor to the Castros — an unassuming organizer molded by the revolutionary process. Confronting a perfect storm of intensified U.S. sanctions, a media war, a devastating pandemic, and historic domestic protests. Díaz-Canel reflects on navigating these existential crises for the nation he has come to lead.

Thank you to Filmmakers Brandt Johnson and Ellen Jovin for joining us this past Saturday at The Main Cinema. We had a wonderful time learning about using the correct way to use an oxford comma.

We've added two encore screenings:
Monday, Sep 21 • 7pm
National Punctuation Day Thur, Sep 24 • 4pm (with Open Captions)

One fall day, Ellen Jovin set up a folding table on a Manhattan sidewalk with a homemade sign that said “Grammar Table.” Right away, passersby began excitedly asking questions, telling stories, and filing complaints.

What happened next is the stuff of grammar legend.

Ellen and her filmmaker husband, Brandt Johnson, took the table on the road, visiting all 50 states as Brandt shot the grammar action. But this story transcends grammar. It’s the story of an epic quest in a divided time to bring us all closer together.

🎟️ Collectible Ticket 002: TEENAGE S*X AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA

ARTIST/MAIN CINEMA STAFF - Max Ridenour

The design direction I chose was inspired by the campy, 80s-slasher aesthetics that the film leans into. I was specifically drawn in by the character of Little Death, the film’s shadowy antagonist, after we had it delivered to our theater in life sized cutout form. I’ve always had a fondness for mysterious masked villains so I wanted this to be the primary visual element of my design.
For the type I was interested in creating a sense of anxiety through occasional variations in font mixed with an otherwise rigid and tightly jammed together arrangement.
The background is a riff on the recursive square motif utilized throughout the film, and I chose to apply a grainy textural effect throughout, hearkening back to the era of tattered VHS covers and pulp horror novels.

When working on this project I was excited to draw from Jane Schoenbrun’s unique and deliberate visual style. After watching I SAW THE TV GLOW, I was most drawn in by all the care taken to create a world and language through the film’s visual elements. Much of their filmography has become essential text for the q***r community, including many people close to me, and I wanted this design to exist in dialogue with their work and the subsequent wave of creativity that it has inspired among q***r artists.

🎟️ First 500 guests to arrive in person will recieve receive a free collectible ticket. Available while supplies last!
