Whenever I head out of town for artist workshops, I try to leave my studio tidy to welcome fresh ideas when I get back. (I also hope a clean space encourages my house sitter to play with some of my supplies.)

This time, I took the deep clean one step further. When I moved into my new home studio the summer of ’23, I needed to protect brand new floors and walls from paint splatter. The challenge? Living in a climate (Minnesota) that’s super humid in the summer and especially dry in the winter.

Here, wood needs to flex and breathe. Anything that traps moisture, such as plastic, invites mold. Therefore, many of the long-term floor and wall protecting solutions I learned from other artists won’t work here.

Years back, when contractors installed a new, gorgeous red birch floor into a home I was remodeling, they covered it right back up with “Ram Board” while they finished construction. I figured, if that protected those soft wood floors from contractor traffic, it would certainly keep paint splatter off my new ones.

Because my studio shares space with my entry foyer, I keep half the room furnished more nicely, then protect those floors with drop clothes when I paint. The other half (7 ‘ x 13’) is my more messy work space and that floor area is permanently covered with ram board. Half a 38” x 50” roll covered the space, so I’ve had the rest waiting for a replacement when the time came.

It’s now been three years, so I figured it was time, plus I wanted to inspect the job it was doing. Friends, it’s held up! The floors underneath looks like new, including a spot where I’d knocked over an entire jar of gloss medium. (I’ll likely need to replace the base shoe on the molding there, but that’s WAY better than replacing flooring.)

I also had an elaborate scheme to protect the walls in that space, and have more investigation to do to see how well that’s worked when I return. I’ll post what I learn, so if you are interested in studio solutions, make sure you are following!

Over this weekend, Minneapolis has been celebrating its very own Prince Rogers Nelson for what would have been his 68th birthday—today!

It seems an especially good day for a "Purple Reigns" reprisal. For the past six months, this elegant triptych has hung in the Minneapolis Convention Center, located equal distance between First Avenue – the iconic music venue were Prince played often, and Vikings Stadium, where sometimes purple reigns too...and just as often breaks heart of Minnesota’s loyal Vikings Fans.

From a far, these pieces appear almost monochromatic, but within those large dark shapes, shades of olive green mingle with those gold accents. In the painting’s quieter spaces, viewers will find creamy whites, slate blues, and subtle blush tones.

One reason these subtle colors are so rich is what's underneath - swipe to see the much bolder colors in the paintings early layers. Those blues and greens give warmth to the thin, softer layers above them much the same way that deeper colors create depth in polished stones.

Each piece in this triptych is acrylic painted on 10” x 40” x 1.5” birchwood panels. The edges of these pieces are protected with clear varnish, allowing that beautiful wood grain to contribute more movement to their story. Together spaced as show, they measure 40” x 40”.
As of July 1, these pieces return to my home studio and I’ll bring another larger work to the convention center to hang for the second half of the year. More on that soon!

Two things make today a special day for art. One is that Saturdays are Open Studio Days at Northrup King, where you can see four floors of artist studios and galleries, including my new space in Gallery Aurora – Studio 179 central in the ground floor corridor. (Enter at 1500 Jackson, turn right, and we’re right there!)

And second, today is day two of the sidewalk store, an amazing, once annual sale at the premier art supplier in the Twin Cities.

One of the ways I take advantage of the sale is as an incentive to experiment with new tools, mediums, and substrates.

For example, “In the Limelight,” a work in acrylic on a 12” x 36” x 2” canvas panel now hanging in my new gallery space came about because I found the panel for half price at the sidewalk sale! Canvas is not normally my jam, but it challenged me to switch up my methods a bit. I adore the result! (Panel edges are painted a slightly limey green so it doesn’t need framing.)

And guess what? This year, I nabbed another one the exact same size! I’ve been pondering oak trees and that broad canvas might just be the perfect host for a broad branched tree, but we’ll see. My paintings seem to have minds of their own!

What would you paint on a long narrow canvas?

They’re back!!

Around this time last year, I shared the progress of a little family of doves that nested in one of my planters. They’ve been here again the past few days and today I found a nest.

They also made eye contact with my little cat, who was behind glass, but possibly a little too close, so we’ll see if they return.

Last year’s visitors inspired two encaustic paintings: “Fledgling,” and “When Doves Fly.” Both are painted on 12” x 12” x 1.5” basswood. Panels edges are treated on tung oil, adding the warmth of that woodgrain to the overall design.

You can find theme and all available artwork on my website. (Link in bio, or just pop my name in your browser.)

Keep swiping to see more photos of today’s visitors and their nest. And be sure to follow so you learn if the doves come back!

I’m mixing things up to replace a large piece that sold at Art-A-Whirl. The “Color of Water 1” joins its mate (“The Color of Water 2”) It’s more subtle palette needed different companion pieces.

I’m really pleased with the sightlines from the hallway, including the gorgeous owl on a colleague’s display that welcomes everyone in.

Northrup King is open every Saturday from 12-4 pm and some galleries are planning to resume first Thursdays from 5-8 pm. The quickest way to find me is enter the 1500 Jackson door and turn right.

Gallery Aurora - Studio 179 is central in the main hallway.

What a Whirl!

I’ve been to Art-A-Whirl as a spectator many times but this past weekend was my first as an exhibitor.

It was So. Much. Fun!!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by Gallery Aurora. I loved every conversation with people out and about to appreciate art!

Art-A-Whirl is the largest open studio event in the country. Northrup King, the building I’m now a guest artist in, is the main hub, but were are 100+ buildings open to the public to showcase art over the weekend.

Watching a steady stream of viewers enter and leave a studio is not for every artist. In a steady stream of viewers, most move through quickly to see what, if anything, catches their eye. It takes thick skin to not take disinterest personally.

But the thing is, art is so very personal, and the way viewers lights up when their eyes lands on a piece they connect with is all its own reward, regardless of whether or not that connection lands in a sale.

Later today I’ll be delivering a larger painting to a collector’s home—and that’s plenty rewarding too.

The show’s not over—Gallery Aurora is open every Saturday from 12-4. One of the many people who took photos and measurements could wander back in to buy something, or reach out through my website (which had a massive uptick in traffic over the weekend.)

I’m just so lucky—and grateful—to live a creative life!

Gallery Aurora - Studio 179 is on the main level of NKB. Enter through Door E and it’s just across the hall!

Art-A-Whirl is only a week away and I spent Saturday zhuzhing my new galley space in studio 179 in th NKB!

In general, I don’t want my art to be too crowded, so my curation was the most spare within the gallery. At the same time, there’s no better weekend to display as much as possible, so I found ways to tuck in a few more pieces.

After finding space to add 6 more paintings, I realized I had business card images for the remaining pieces I brought as back-ups. A little sign now says “please ask to view….” I’ll be curious to learn how this works.

Art-A-Whirl officially opens Friday the 15th, but you don’t have to wait if you love a piece on one of these walls. I’d be delighted to have my curation scrambled with an early sale or two!

😉

What do you think? Is the art too crowded, or just right? Or do you think I might squeeze more in?

🔴 Sold!

“The Way to Santa Fe” will be making its way to a forever home in Massachusetts! It will join a collection with two of early favorites. This collector said she’s had her eye on this for a while. When she saw in my recent post hanging in my new studio space, it pushed her over the edge. I’m thrilled to know a friend will have it!

My favorite detail about this painting is that gorgeous sky—a mostly happy accident while clearing some colors from an old palette, and one that told me this board wanted to be a landscape. Sometimes a painting just knows what it’s meant to be!

Friends, I’m excited to announce that I’ve recently joined the fellowship of artists hanging in the Northrop King Building. is one of the most well-known destinations for art in the Twin Cities and a major draw during seasonal art crawls.

Because that’s true, finding suitable space anywhere in the building is a HUGE challenge, and a bit of an insiders game. But a dear friend who runs a different gallery there forwarded news of an opening in the . I applied, and they loved my work!

Gallery Aurora – Studio 179 is centrally located on the first floor’s main corridor. My wall is visible from the hallway, so I am feeling chuffed about the whole arrangement. But what excites me most is that I once again have colleagues to learn from and grow with!

I’d love to see you for a visit in my home studio or at Gallery Aurora - Studio 179. I plan to be in the gallery most of the days it’s open, but it’s always wise to check with me first, especially if there’s a particular piece you are wanting to see.
