Our first guest is Johnathan (He/Him/His). He grew up in Delano, MN and although that small town will always be home, he is a citizen of the world, having lived in Uruguay and traveled extensively outside the United States.
He now resides in Minneapolis, where he is a Spanish Teacher, as well as a Co-Advisor for his schools GSA (Gay-Straight- Alliance). In his free time he enjoys the relaxing, challenging, but more importantly beautiful creativity of Aerial. Johnathan’s love for Aerial comes from many different aspects of life, not only being athletic and healthy (which he wasn’t always), but also doing something creative and freeing. Camilo sits down with Johnathan and learns what inspired him to become a teacher and how language and travel were a big part of that.
As an openly Q***r co-advisor of his schools GSA (Gay-Straight-Alliance) or as his group has coined it “Gender-Sexuality-Alliance), he offers his students a safe space where they can be themselves as well as get mentoring with a diverse range of issues, topics and projects. He believes that using proper Pronouns can be life changing and he sees the value in making every effort to use those pronouns Correctly and Consistently.
As someone who did not see themselves positively portrayed in the media with any LGBTQ characters growing up, much less one that he could relate with, he hopes to be a model of just one version of a Gay man that some of his students could identify with - Someone who lives authentically.
