Marybeth Kurnat (1987) is an emerging voice in choral music in the Chicago area. Her authentic compositional style, especially her harmonic language, is heavily influenced by her musical foundation as a jazz saxophonist. Her work, “I, Lover,” was the 2021-22 Winner of the Stephen Paulus Emerging Composer’s Competition. She was a 2023 Composition Fellow for the PREMIERE|Project Festival. Marybeth holds a B.M. in Music Education from Northern Illinois University, and serves as a music educator in DeKalb, IL. She maintains an active performance schedule as a soloist and choral singer with several Chicago-area choirs.

On August 21st (TWO WEEKS!! 🎉), the ground-breaking professional vocal ensemble Vox Urbane will release its debut album on the Resonus Classics label.

Entitled London Calling, the album features new music by London-based composers and includes works by Emily Hazrati, Barbara Dudek, Kerensa Briggs, Tara Mack, Lillie Harris, Jago Thornton, Dan Ludford-Thomas and the late Francis Routh.

Reflecting Vox Urbane’s commitment to championing under-represented voices, the recording brings together composers from a rich variety of cultural, social and artistic backgrounds, celebrating the diversity and creativity that define London’s contemporary musical landscape.

To support the ensemble’s drive for change, Vox Urbane will embark on a 10-week pilot project in London’s Abbey Manor College, Lewisham, in October 2026, working with children excluded from mainstream education and enabling them to explore music and create vocal music to remove barriers to participation for marginalised young people.
