The wings we made for our pollinator dance during the Pollinator Shanty era are being used for my Pollinator Flash Mob this year (2022). Two weekends left of the Art Shanty Projects. Here’s the link to the tutorial. Practice a bit at home and meet us at the pollinator bench in the shanty town triangle. Lake Harriet at 1:00 to get your pollinator costume on. We perform at 1:30.

I had this tutorial all fine tuned and my computer didn't have enough space to save the better version. I hope this works as the final tutorial for everyone ...

I was over at Studio Garagemahal today at the wearable ArtCar workshop and noticed how pretty the bike rack looks with fresh snow.

It’s good to know our pollinator bike rack was used all summer in the Powderhorn neighborhood.

Feel free to visit the Pollinator Shanty at the MN Valley Wildlife Refuge in Bloomington. Just east of the Mall of America. Take American Boulevard east until you see the sign for the Refuge. Enjoy and plant native flowers and bushed for our pollinators this spring. Thank you for visiting and sharing our wonderful experience during the Art Shanty Projects on Lake Harriet.

Here's a cool video I made this morning... a Happy Accident as a friend calls it.

I was listening to Philip Glass while watching this clip on my laptop of myself riding one of our insect bikes with monarch wings, yellow-jacket fender and waring my queen bee skep during the 2020 Art Shanty Projects as a bit of performance art for our Pollinator Shanty.
As a beekeeper I was overcome with feelings of empathy for all insects while I made this phone video. I thought “This is what it must feel like for a tiny insect to navigate through unfamiliar territory searching for food and shelter not finding nourishment or a safe place to build a home. The mural of flowers does not cut it, nothing is natural."
Humans have altered environments across the globe. Insects and sentient beings are struggling. We each can make small changes to help restore environments for all sentient beings everywhere. Small acts add up to accumulation of restoration all over the globe.

"What is it like to be the last of a species?"

"This earth is our home! Let's honor it."

After making this one I made several short videos with different music, different clips, trying to make a better one. As it turns out the first one had such a strong impact on me. The music ended perfectly. I was connected to listening as I was to seeing while I made this phone video.
This is why I wanted to share this “happy mistake” with you.
Plant native plants wherever you can.
Long live the insects! The planet needs them!

Pollinator Shanty

The Pollinator Shanty is a touch of summer in the dead of winter! The shanty has a wrap-around mural of a sweet Minnesota native garden, full of plants which serves as food for our MN pollinators. Be inspired to grow these types of plants in your own garden next spring. Strap on a fancy pollinator helmet and grab one of the pollinator bicycles from the caterpillar bike rack and take it for a spin. Participate in a flash mob with a variety of pollinators to dance to "Staying Alive" by the Bee Gees. Enter the shanty to be transported to the oyamel forest between the Mexican states of Michoacán and Estado de Mexico where our monarchs from Minnesota are wintering. Warm up by the chimenea, as you create a butterfly puppet to add to the branches of the oyamel fir trees.

The Art Shanty Projects are on Lake Harriet starting January 18 - February 9th, 10am-4pm on weekends. We hope to see you on the ice at some point during the festival.
