The committee members of Indian Adoptees of Minnesota would like to announce a transition of organization over to the facebook group SANGAM, one of the many programs that Sewa - Asian Indian Family Wellness offers.

This transition is occurring because one of our committee members who has a passionate vision for supporting Indian adoptees recently took on a position within SEWA-Aifw, which has enthusiastically invited her to start a focus group -SANGAM- which supports Indian adoptees explore their culture/heritage and integrate with the broader Indian community. SANGAM is a Hindi word meaning confluence. We chose this word to celebrate the culture we came from while creating a confluence with the day-to-day lives we lead now.

This is a fluid transition: primarily all events going forward for the time being will be organized by SANGAM. However, please continue following the Indian Adoptees of Minnesota page, as it will remain active for future use when needed.

As an example of this transition, Indian Adoptees of Minnesota will be co-hosting our Holi event with SANGAM in order to pass the torch, and then from there on, SANGAM will be taking over the organization events. Hope to see you on April 24th for our Holi event!

Please reach out to us with questions or concerns. Thank you!

We’ve enjoyed having Indian adoptees from a variety of states and countries over the last few months. After careful thought, we’ve decided to focus our virtual events to Minnesotan adoptees only. From time to time, we will open the events to individuals outside of Minnesota. Thank you to everyone who has participated thus far!

Last night we had a great discussion about the documentary Searching for Mum, as well as a few other topics too. We had people joining us from all over the country - MN, UT, MO, TX, WA, and even a few joining internationally including Denmark and Pune, India! Thanks to everyone who tuned in 🙂 especially those of you who joined in the middle of the night from other parts of the world ;)

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our first of our series of film discussions... It was great to re-visit the movie Lion and also talk about other adoptee-related topics such as going back to your birthplace, birth searches, genealogy/DNA testing, etc. We hope to see you all at our next zoom film discussion series "Searching for Mum" (link to the documentary in the event page)

🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳

This weekend, a few of the Indian Adoptees of Minnesota planning committee members were supposed to be in Colorado as camp counselors/coordinators for Indian-Nepalese Heritage Camp, or INHC. Unfortunately the camp was cancelled due to COVID-19, but they were able to participate in a Virtual INHC instead!

Over 65 families/campers/counselors/coordinators/volunteers/staff all tuned in for a zoom session on Friday evening for the opening ceremony, and again on Saturday evening for the dance party/closing ceremony. People tuned in from the following locations:
Boulder CO
Brooklyn Center MN
California
Charlotte NC
Chicago IL
Colorado Springs CO
Denver CO
Florida
Hawaii
Kansas
Lincoln NE
Minneapolis MN
New Mexico
Pittsburgh PA
Richfield MN
Rochester MN
Seattle WA
St. Joseph MN
St. Paul MN
Utah
Vancouver Canada
Vermont
What a great turnout!

In between the opening and closing ceremonies, each age group of campers had their own zoom sessions, each focusing on a different topic of Indian/Nepalese culture (whether that be music/drumming, dancing, or cooking). A few of our Indian Adoptees of Minnesota planning committee members attended the high school zoom session, since they were high school counselors last summer. The high school zoom topic was cooking stuffed parathas, a type of Indian/Nepalese flatbread. Another planning committee member helped organize and facilitate the post-high school and counselor social zoom session.

Another tradition of camp every year is to start out the opening ceremony with Indian or Nepalese food. We’ve got a few pictures of our Indian food meals/fancy drinks/snacks pictured here as well. One of our planning committee members loves mint chutney so much she eats it straight out of the jar!!! 😂

Although virtual camp was a blast, it was also bittersweet because we were all missing our trip out to Colorado and our INHC family. It just makes us all the more excited for INHC 2021... If you’re at all interested in getting involved next summer, please reach out to us! We’d love to have more Minnesota counselors/coordinators 🙂 Dates are July 8th-11th, 2021. Hope you can join us then!
