Join us to kick off the 2026-2027 season of the FIKA Supper Club Concert Series with OK Factor and Jaerv on Sunday, October 18! This collaboration between two highly acclaimed folk ensembles from the US and Sweden has delighted audiences in both countries. They return to ASI together with new songs and stories to tell.

The FIKA Supper Club series brings Nordic-inflected folk, jazz, and classical artists to ASI. Optionally, guests may enjoy extended dinner hours at FIKA Café before the concert, then step into Larson Hall for a musical treat beginning at 7 pm. Don’t miss these nights of musical and culinary delight!

Can you spot someone in the rock face?

Lauren | Colorado, US, 2024

Lauren was only sixteen when she learned about brownfields: contaminated land that nobody is legally obligated to clean up. Her neighborhood of Rossford, Ohio had been manufacturing industrial glass since the late 1800s, leaving behind brownfields.

Now, Lauren is an environmental engineer who has devoted her life to designing experiments to clean contaminated soil using fungi. For her PhD studies, Lauren chose the Atlantic Wood Industries Superfund Site, considered too difficult to clean, where she ran the fungi experiment on the site's most polluted soils and got over eighty percent cleanup rates in a month.

Join us in welcoming back Nichole Accettola on Thursday, October 29, to discuss her latest cookbook, “Scandinavian Everyday: Vibrant, Simple Meals from Northern Europe”, in conversation with Minnesota-based chef and author Amy Thielen.

A CIA-trained chef and IACP award-winning author, Nichole draws on her years living in Denmark and running San Francisco’s Scandinavian-inspired Kantine to explore a simple, sustainable approach to everyday cooking. She’ll be joined by Amy, a two-time James Beard Award-winning cookbook author and host of Heartland Table and the Ham Radio podcast, to discuss Nichole’s culinary journey, share insights into the book, and highlight a few favorite recipes.

The event also includes hands-on workshop inspired by the book, offering an opportunity to learn from Nichole herself and new recipes.

Anu is the chief of the Vuonislahti village in Finland, a community of two hundred villagers who are experts in ‘talkoot,’ - collective voluntary labor for the sole reward of doing the work together.

Riitta and Karoline spoke to Anu about Europe’s largest ice road that connects to their village. She said, “It used to be more or less a given that the road would open each winter. Now, in several winters since 2000, we just haven't had strong enough ice to open.” Without the ice road in the winter, a 10-minute zip across the lake becomes over an hour.

ASI is lucky to have added three works to our collection this year from Swedish-American artist Elof Wedin. See these new additions and other gems from the collection before the exhibition ends on October 25.

Elof Wedin (1901-1983) was a Swedish-American artist with a 50-year career in the Twin Cities. Born in Härnösand, Ångermanland, Sweden, Wedin immigrated to the United States in 1919. In the 1920s, he attended art school at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He painted in the evenings and on weekends while working as a boilermaker during the day. During the 1930s, Wedin completed several New Deal art projects, using his unique geometric abstraction style to depict towns along Minnesota’s North Shore and Minneapolis street scenes.

Wedin's works are held in several important private and institutional collections, such as the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
