Thank you to the city and community of Milwaukee. Last week I was honored to receive the Mildred L Harpole Artist of the Year Award. I was awkwardly led to the podium to give a speech that I did not know I was supposed to have. I wish I had known to prepare myself with something written. It was a deer in the headlights moment. I regret not acknowledging and thanking my family for the years of support. My mom who would draw my He-Man and other action toys with me. But most of all I regret forgetting to thank my two kids who are no longer kids. They are the real reasons that made me a better artist. I often say, I didn’t really know how to paint until I became a father. Every painting I make was able to be opened, because of them.
My sister thought it was funny that I received an award from the city, only then to lecture them. But I decided to stay and live in the city of Milwaukee to raise my family and build my studio practice because of how affordable it was. Because we as artists were helping the city grow. But as we did so, the city became a lot more expensive and harder to afford as artist. The city needs to buy art. To allow us to financially thrive and survive to create in this city. Wisconsin is near dead last in arts funding. Programs need to be implemented for us, if the city want to retain our talent and continue to build and grow.

Land in Laws of Exponents of Bones x Blood = Seeds (2026).
Today I receive an award by the city of Milwaukee for my work. Recently my work and I have received quite a few awards/ acknowledgements/ nominations (more on all this later). And I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has supported and recognized the work that I do. I always appreciate the relationships I’ve made through my practice and genuinely feel grateful for everyone’s recognition of each piece I have made over the many years.
Thank you

I recently saw a video of a child shot on the street and father shot by a soldier as he desperately tries to reach his son’s lifeless body. I then saw another post of a father panicking as he carries his daughter’s body. I didn’t have it in me to share any of it. I don’t think I can see it again. The system is guilty for creating a system of trauma, and guilty for having us become traumatized by the trauma of the children and their parents.
Well anyway, here’s an for a new piece I started.

Land In Denomination of Homes & Zeros (2026).
Working through artist statement and writing has been a challenge recently with writers block. I’ve realized that all my past statements were written in a lecturing tone to readers who have been unaware of western propaganda and efforts, colonialism and theft or resources in the Arab world. The narratives and stereotypes it created. But the last nearly three years the world has changed. Generations woke up to knowledge I don’t have to continue to scream out the window about anymore. So now, I have to adjust my writing and talk about the work, my technique and not be your source to educate on why we are where we are

I enjoy watching the because I love films. My first born is an aspiring filmmaker and we would watch so many large blockbusters and small independent films together. Through films you can reach so many people more people than my paintings can in a gallery or museum. I think of that when I saw powerful films like or . So many films with so much to say. And yet, it’s always very disappointing to see so many actors and filmmakers who could say so much at such a moment, but then choose to say nothing. It was a joy to hear
