Artist Statement: Everything is an interior space: a thought, or idea; reflective of an experience or memory. What does my work look like to you? Because… I’m not so sure, at times. It may come to me later, or reveal itself.

Sometimes it’s just a study; a compositional test for myself. To be tucked away for future use. I removed myself years ago, but slowly and stealthily, hide myself back in: disguised; secondary. Not the focal point, but a connection from the past to the present. An effort to make a more perfect composition.

Not too busy, not too quiet.

Just right.

Balanced.

Zach Mory comes from the small town of Cottage Grove, WI, a few miles southeast of Madison, WI. Initially trained as a life drawer, his work slowly turned towards the abstract and non-objective possibilities of art making as his undergraduate schooling continued at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In the spring of 2008, he received his MFA from UW-Madison with a concentration in drawing.
Zach’s work has been featured in New American Paintings, Starry Night’s Artists to Look Out For, Studio Visit, and Dialogist among others. He continues to show his work in numerous galleries and institutions, most recently at Miishkooki Gallery, The Bubbler, and the Frank Juarez Gallery.
Since his graduation he has taught various courses throughout Wisconsin and Illinois at UW-Madison, Carthage College, Lawrence University, Ripon College, Waubonsee Community College and most recently at the College of DuPage in their graphic design program. He also teaches high school art at Wheaton Warrenville South High School. He currently lives in Glen Ellyn, IL with his wife Melanie and their beautiful daughters Josephine and Lilah.
Artist Statement: One week before the stay-at-home order was put in place back in March, I had a long phone conversation with a former professor of mine. The timing was good. I was able to develop a character which could function as a stand-in for my current emotional state and interactions with the world, both interior and exterior. Using old cartoon tropes such as bulging eyes, white gloves and comical proportions, this new “vessel” could help me to explore my inner world more intricately. The spring, summer and fall of 2020 has seen a global pandemic, political unrest, racial strife, police brutality and so much more. This paradigm shift has, much like with many other artists, opened the door onto a new way in which we can interact with the world and express ourselves. As an artist who was predominantly working in abstraction for many years, this foray into Magic Realism (artists such as John Wilde and Gertrude Abercrombie have been large influences on this series) was also refreshing, new and scary. The output of this turn in my artistic trajectory is represented here with these 14 new drawings.

Foreword by Zach Mory In the winter of late 2012 or early 2013, I remember heading to downtown Chicago for an informal get-to-together with Nathan Vernau, Morgan Sims, and Raeleen Kao at Nathan and Morgan’s place, the Milk Factory. We had some drinks, projected some artwork on the wall to discuss ...

My collages are driven by a collection of items, ideas, and images. In my studio I reduce those visuals through an experimental and editing process. As a result, bringing what is important to the surface so that the viewer can interpret his or her own meaning.
