The August Wilson Monologue Competition was founded by Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theater Company in Atlanta, GA. The competition was created to highlight the amazing works of playwright August Wilson. August Wilson’s works have been widely recognized as masterpieces, because (to quote Francis Faye, AWMC Regional competitor) “(He) accurately represents black struggles, diction and the black community.”

In addition, August Wilson’s written representation allows minority students a chance to share stories they may relate to, and compete for a chance to perform on a Broadway stage, just like Yexuanj and Fardowso! AWMC Nationals isn’t just a competition, though. It is also a weekend filled with acting workshops, coaching, and even conversations with those who were close to August Wilson himself.

MEET THE COMPETITORS! Anyiah Lobley is one of the ten, talented August Wilson Monologue Competitors to qualify for Regionals! There is something unique about her monologue choice, however. It is that she is playing an old man.

“I chose [Toledo] because I felt his monologue was different and I really liked how August Wilson wrote it. The scenario is kind of sad, but the way he connected African Americans… as leftovers...Really the way he described the story… our ancestors and how… we’re kind of like the leftovers of history.”

She also participated in the AWMC workshops, with positive reviews!

“The workshops prior to the competition, [what a] talented group of ladies and gentlemen. It was such an honor just to be in the room with everyone and seeing their monologues… I’m really grateful just to see the talent that’s in Milwaukee.”

“I would also like to shout out Mr. Kendrik and Ms. Ashley… me being here would not be possible without them.”

You can see Anyiah Lobley’s monologue performance at AWMC Regionals TONIGHT Monday, March 29th @ 7:30 PM CT
RSVP to watch by emailing [email protected] with AWMC in the subject line.

MEET THE COMPETITORS! Kamani Graham is one of the ten, talented August Wilson Monologue Competitors to qualify for regionals! He is competing with a Youngblood monologue from “Jitney.”

“I was snooping around Youtube just looking at other people do [eligible] monologues… and I stumbled across my monologue performed by Andre Holland. He’s a really good actor. When I saw him do it I was really connected to it.... I relate to my character, because we both feel as though people don’t listen to our problems and I’ve experienced that a lot recently, more than ever.”

He also has this to say about August Wilson: “I feel that August Wilson is just a really personable playwright… Every single one of his works you can find one of the characters. ‘Oh my goodness I know someone just like that, the person down the street, or my aunt’... he’s such a people person… You just see how that reflects in his work.”

Kamani also shared this intelligent acting advice: “Just to be myself. I can’t be any but myself… just a different extension of myself.”

You can see Kamani Graham’s monologue performance at AWMC Regionals TOMORROW Monday, March 29th @ 7:30 PM CT
RSVP to watch by emailing [email protected] with AWMC in the subject line.

MEET THE COMPETITORS! Jonathan Edwards is one the ten, talented August Wilson Monologue Competitors to qualify for regionals! This isn’t Jonathan’s first rodeo, however. He participated in last year’s shadow year and was one of the runner-ups!

What inspired him to compete? The Milwaukee Rep’s production of “Two Trains Running.” “I saw the production… when they had it. In the following season they announced the competition, and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s really interesting because I really enjoyed the play, and I’d really love to explore more about… August Wilson.’”

Throughout his time watching and performing August Wilson’s work, he has found a sense of relatability. “[His work] relates to me because his writing really reflects the community that I grew up in. My Dad is a barber, so… the way to that he writes the community really reminds me of… spending… weekends at my Dad’s barbershop.”

Jonathan also relates to the character of his monologue from “Radio Golf.” “Sterling Johnson’s monologue really… spoke to me… It was all about a man who was self-employed and was trying to continue… with his work and… be his own boss. I relate to his drive… [and] really wanting to make his own.”

You can see Jonathan Edward’s monologue performance at AWMC Regionals this Monday, March 29th @ 7:30 PM CT
RSVP to watch by emailing [email protected] with AWMC in the subject line.
