SMAC leaders know that there is more than meets the eye in the arts. We engage artists, students, audience and passerbys through sharing positive emotions, nurturing relationships and giving meaning to life. In MKE, we are just one of the threads that create a beautiful tapestry towards our public health goals as a community.

One thing that creates healthy communities is the sense of achievement.

A cast member who started with Capita Productions 10 years ago as a very shy, teenage back-up singer now confidently steps into the spotlight to expertly deliver a powerful solo anthem that fills the audience with emotion while still continuing his back-up singing for the show.

offer an inspiring haven for artists with big visions, because it combines fearless ambition with rigorous craft in a supportive community. They embrace bold, provocative theatre as a public good, producing original works, new work, and “dangerous classics” that push boundaries and challenge audiences. Their commitment to creating viscerally driven live theatre gives artists space to experiment, fail, and grow.

After their 50th anniversary concert Judah Gowie, age 7, the youngest TON drummer at the time, had this to say when asked about the impact of African drumming in his life - "Drumming makes me strong here,” (gesturing to his muscled arms) “and drumming makes me strong HERE!” (gesturing to his heart). In 2026 Ko-Thi Dance Company celebrates its 57th year of artistic programming reaching hundreds of little Judahs … the oldest African-American performing arts organization in the State of Wisconsin.

Help us keep young and old artists strong.

Cortez Burt, a strong advocate and leader in helping CAPITA Productions remain true to its purpose. As a graduate from North Division HS, where it all began, he has always been a very supportive partner, musician, advocate and mentor with and through CAPITA. Cortez was one of the first musicians during the launch of CAPITA back in the late 80’s. Always by the side of his mentor, Arlene Skwierawski, guiding the progression and development of what CAPITA is today. Cortez L. Burt has transitioned from this earthly life, but his spirit and love for his community, church and family will live on. It was always a pleasure to have Cortez work with our musicians and sometimes direct the We Are the Drum show. We will miss his leadership, his bubbly personality, that smile and his passion for community arts programs. He has spent his life blessing many others with his music ministry. Now God has gained another angel who is up above playing that heavenly Hammond B3 Organ.
