Inkosi Namandla | Michael Barrett

Barrett’s Inkosi Namandla, reimagines the South African hymn Ke na le modisa (‘I have a Shepherd’), based on Psalm 23, which through tribal wars, to the shadow of apartheid and its aftermath, offered generations comfort, resilience and hope.

Deus in Adjutorium | Michael Ostrzyga

Ostrzyga’s virtuosic, multilayered Deus in Adjutorium contrasts blasting walls of dense chords with frenetic, agitated sixteenth note passages. The murky middle section: “Make haste, O God, to deliver me”, slowly rises like heavy incense before returning to the cries of the thick fanfare chords and frantic, rapid runs, before finally settling down to a low “Alleluia” that gradually emerges out of deep, obscure harmony.
