The Milwaukee Philharmonic will be giving its final performance under the direction of Dr. Matthew Makeever as Music Director. The orchestra will be once again sharing the stage with Josh Kimball and the New Berlin Eisenhower High School Chamber Orchestra.

Soloing on our concert this evening is graduating senior Zak Chen! Zak will be playing the second movement of the Sibelius Violin Concerto.

Zak is a scholarship fellow at the Music Institute of Chicago’s Academy. He studies violin with Almita Vamos and Dr. Bernard Zinck. Zak has won numerous awards as a soloist. He was the Winner of 2023 Wisconsin Philharmonic Shining Star Competition, 2023 and 2022 Civic Music Association of Milwaukee High School Competition, a finalist of the 2022 Bolz Young Artist Competition, honorable mention in the 2022 Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s Stars of Tomorrow Competition, winner of the 2020 Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra Senior Concerto Competition, and the recipient of the 2022 Civic Music Association of Milwaukee High School
Award for Outstanding Achievement in Musicianship, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service.

In order to pursue both Science and Music, he has accepted the Tuition Waiver Award to double major in Chemistry and Music (Violin Performance) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Meet Josh Kimball, the Director of Orchestras at New Berlin Eisenhower Middle-High School.

Mr. Kimball has had an incredbile track record of success, ranging from high-caliber classroom instruction, the production of quality performnces, and growth and development of his educational programs. In 2023, Mr. Kimball was nominated for the Herb Kohl Fellow- ship award. This award is presented to teachers for their excellence in leadership and service in and outside of the classroom, the ability to inspire a love of learning, and to motivate their students. Mr. Kimball and our music director Matthew Makeever have know each other for 10 years.

The Milwaukee Philharmonic is extremely excited to play alongside the New Berlin Eisenhower High School Chamber Orchestra in our first ever side-by-side educational outreach concert on Thursday!

Our FIFTH season closes on Saturday with a World Premiere and Milwaukee Philharmonic commission by our Principal Oboist, Joshua Guarisco. This is not the first time his music has been performed by this orchestra. The Milwaukee Philharmonic premiered his piece, "A Happy Medium," in 2019.

This new composition for the orchestra, "Grief" is a musical exploration through the five stages.

In his own words, he stated, "In many ways, this piece was not meant to be about grief. It just turned out that way…"
