The Black Diaspora Symphony Orchestra The Black Diaspora Symphony Orchestra of Milwaukee

Mission: To place the Motherland & her children

05/18/2026

Thank you The Black Diaspora Symphony Orchestra musicians for playing the MSO Milwaukee Musician Showcase.

Dear Fellow Musicians,

Thank you so much for a great concert!! This is a team effort that takes all of us to make possible. A special thank you to Autumn Maria Reed for allowing us to record both her Exodus from Extinction and Why? The King of Love is Dead. A special thank you to composer and conductor Kevin Scott for making Harry Lawrence Freeman's Valdo, available.

In closing, I realize it would have been easy to do something familiar or massively popular. However, to do that does not bring us closer to understanding our history as the people of the United States, nor does it bring us closer together globally as one human family. I continue to be amazed by the number of Black, Latin, Women, and American composers who have been forgotten about and/or deliberately neglected. For any musician to participate in BDSO is to take a chance on correcting this imbalance. Please accept my deepest thanks for being brave, daring, ambitious, and leaning in with all your heart and soul to make the impossible and historically significant, real for everyone. It is this fire that distinguishes typical musicians and composers from great artists. Thank you for allowing me to spend time in the presence of great artists and pushing me further to match your excellence.

Sincerely,

Dayvin Hallmon

Apologies About Today's Rehearsal

To the musicians who came to Central United Methodist tonight and found the doors locked expecting a 5pm rehearsal, I am so very, very sorry!!

As an organization, some things have improved. Other things still need work, and there are definitely areas where mistakes can not afford to be made. Tonight is a clear example of that.

My deepest apologies that you did not receive the message that the time and location of the dress rehearsal had been moved. Please know that you will still be paid for showing up today. I promise you that moving forward, this will not happen again.

It has taken awhile but I think we do have a strong administrative team in place. Perhaps some items ought not to be delegated and should be handled personally. Or if they are delegated, proper supports are in place to make sure things happen smoothly, efficiently, and expediently, without error.

In closing, I try to live my life in the relentless pursuit of excellence. For me, that means not only meeting the expectations of those around me and those that I work with, but it means exceeding those expectations. Today, that did not happen. I fell remarkably short. Please know I view your artistry, time, and commitment as immensely valuable. Without you, none of this would even be possible. My deepest apologies about today's lack of communication in scheduling.

Sincerely,

Music Director
D. Hallmon
