My brother Isaac is a professional filmmaker with an impressive résumé filled with incredible work (IsaacDeitz.com). As his brother, I was incredibly fortunate to have him film my early school shows back in 2008 and beyond. We've grown in our professions together, learning side by side. Every year, I’d spend a few months at his house during the winter, working on a documentary about buskers—a profession that’s often misunderstood and undervalued, despite its ability to be truly impactful and inspiring.
As a street performer, I can tell you it keeps your ego in check and can humble you in seconds—it’s not for the faint of heart. It offers anyone at any level, a stage, a platform, and a voice, allowing them to create art for people from all walks of life. It’s much bigger than me, and bring so much value to people’s lives, which sometimes is mis understood or under appreciated. It’s raw, unfiltered, and happens in real time.
When we began filming and collecting nearly 10TB of footage, my brother said to me, ‘This story is about you and your journey.’ I resisted at first because I wanted the film to reflect not just my experiences but also the incredible work of other performers, like the pogo performers I connect with every year at Pogo Palooza. But eventually, we focused on telling my story.
Making this documentary has been a massive learning experience for both of us. Just the two of us working on it, we’ve faced all the challenges that come with creating a film. With no marketing budget, no dedicated team for websites or festival submissions, we had to do everything ourselves, sifting through an overwhelming amount of footage. I trusted Isaac’s talent to craft a compelling story from what we captured, and he delivered. I remember telling him, ‘We don’t need any marketing; it only needs to be good.’ And he didn’t just make it good—he made something truly special. The documentary has already won 4x ‘Best Documentary’ awards, and I believe it’s going to be a groundbreaking film unlike anything you’ve seen.
