The two paintings, Mary and Her Lamb and The Young Mother, were stolen from Kenneth Lux Gallery and Hirschl & Adler Galleries in New York in 1978. Martha Walter mastered the human figure with her paintings of Ellis Island and ladies at leisure. A plein-air Impressionist known for her vivid palette, Walter studied under William Merritt Chase.

Mastering black pigment was extraordinarily difficult; most Impressionists felt it risked disrupting the style's emphasis on lightness and pure sensation. Walter, however, leaned into it. She became one of the few American Impressionists to successfully integrate the color black into her work, as seen here in her painting, Ladies of Leisure. Her application of black pigment on the ladies' clothing and within the shadows didn’t hinder her ability to capture the light breaking through the umbrella.

This painting will be featured in our upcoming Fall Fine Art Auction on October 29th.

Revealing two incredible oil paintings by Robert E. Weaver, an American regionalist artist, muralist, and illustrator.

In these paintings, Weaver takes us into the excitement of the circus. “Weaver’s works echo with the color and pageantry of the Big Top world he knew and loved. His canvases are bright and bombastic...” PBS short documentary of the artist.

Rest in peace, Mary Heilmann, who passed on Monday at age 86.

Heilmann was an American contemporary artist known for her vibrant, abstract paintings that blend elements of modernism, Pop Art, and craft traditions. Born in 1940 in San Francisco, California, Heilmann studied ceramics at the University of California, Berkeley, before shifting her focus to painting in the late 1960s.

Her artistic style is characterized by bold colors, gestural brushstrokes, and a playful, intuitive approach. She drew inspiration from personal experiences, memories, and popular culture, often embedding subtle narratives within her abstract compositions.

Heilmann's contributions to contemporary art have been widely recognized, and her work will remain influential in the art world.
