Detroit Iron - UP Weathered

Born in Detroit, this old truck eventually found its way hundreds of miles north, into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula—a landscape of long winters, deep snow, and weather that does not treat machinery gently.

By the time I found her, the polished Detroit finish was long gone. Paint had oxidized into green and blue, chrome had surrendered to rust, and decades of northern weather were written across every panel.

But nothing about her felt defeated.

She stood there with the unmistakable weight of something built in another era—Detroit iron that had survived long enough to become its own record of time and place.

Made in Detroit. Weathered in the North. Still standing.

Their petals curl toward one another like mirrored forms—part flower, part sculpture, part something almost otherworldly. I’ve always loved the way this image seems to hover between the familiar and the strange.

The Golden Ticket

The Pere Marquette 1225 had been destined for the scrap pile when someone noticed the numbers on her side: 12–25. Christmas Day. That small coincidence helped spare the great locomotive from destruction.

Years later, those same numbers—and this remarkable train—would inspire a boy named Chris Van Allsburg, the future author of The Polar Express, and with it the kind of wonder only a little boy can feel, standing before something vast and powerful and believing, with his whole heart, that it might carry him straight into Christmas.

On a winter night in Owosso, Michigan, as 1225 emerged through the steam, that same sense of wonder still seemed to linger in the air.

Hi friends and visitors! Here's a blast from the past (no pun intended).

The Pere Marquette 1225 had been destined for the scrap pile when someone noticed the numbers on her side: 12–25. Christmas Day. That small coincidence helped spare the great locomotive from destruction. The Blue Hour

A flash of impossible blue emerges from the shadows, suspended for a moment among deep foliage and violet blooms. In the stillness, the butterfly seems almost luminous — a fleeting piece of twilight given wings.
