PASSING THE BATON

As we come up on three years of the Time’s Right Open Mic, the time has come for me to pass the baton. I am stepping back from hosting the monthly Time’s Right open mic at Cafe Wren, and I’m very excited to announce that Josh Rodriguez will continue to host!

There are new endeavors on the horizon for me, and it’s my time to step aside. All good things come to an end - but I don’t want this to end…

So much more than I could have ever imagined has happened because of this open mic.

I’ve seen so many of you grow as artists, breaking through fears, becoming more comfortable performing, getting a first gig, or getting more gigs. I’ve witnessed new creative collaborations, new friendships, there’s even been romance. Improv breakthroughs. Songwriters and poets who practically write their material on the spot. Spontaneous jams on the porch. It’s all been such a joy to see, and it's for these reasons the show must go on!

I’m so thrilled that Josh is going to take over the monthly open mic at Cafe Wren. A singer and guitar player, many of you have seen him perform at past open mics, and he’s been co-hosting with me for the last two months. You’re in very good hands.

Thank you all so much for coming out and co-creating this with me over the last three years!

I'd love to see you all next Thursday, March 20th at Café Wren to celebrate this passing of the torch AND our 3 year anniversary!!!

Well, that was rough. This isn't always easy. In fact, it usually isn't, but last night was especially challenging.

I didn't think I'd have to explicitly spell this out, but humans do continue to amaze me, and what may seem obvious to one person is lost on another.

That said, NEW RULE: Perform as if there are children in the room. Sometimes there are (and if there aren't, there are children upstairs, and we're amplified).

There is some subject matter that is more appropriate for a therapist's office than a room full of people. I realize that this night is therapeutic for many people, and it's supposed to be! But there is a line.

Perform like there are kids in the room.

When I started this open mic, the idea was to inspire and encourage each other. To lift each other up. To create community, meet new people, forge new bonds. I can't tell you how happy it made me a couple months ago when I went out on the porch to see a spontaneous 8-person jam session going on. Or when I see new collaborations happen. Or when someone pushes past their fear and anxiety and gets up there to perform. This is what I'm talking about!

I thank you all for coming last night.
