Coprinus Comatus, also known as the Shaggy Mane Inky Cap, dissolves into a naturally inky liquid. I made my own shaggy mane ink and used it for the line work and shading of this new watercolor piece.

All of these mushrooms were harvested from local forests and etched using various styluses. The designs are permanent and will be preserved as the mushrooms dry out.

I have been fond of chickadees since I was about three years old, and one crashed into our kitchen window while I was playing in the sandbox in the yard. It was stunned so my mom picked it up and gently put it in my little palms to hold, creating a special moment for me, until it recovered and flew away. I was mesmerized and will probably always feel something special for chickadees.

The pink moccasin flower is the one lady's slipper I seem to find the most in the woods of Pennsylvania. It is always a thrill to stumble upon a cluster of this delicate, terrestrial, mountain orchid. Once you find a colony, you can visit them year after year as long as the soil remains acidic enough for this finicky flower. They will soon be pushing through the ground in early May. The plant can easily be recognized before flowering by its two deeply ribbed, orchid-like leaves that lie opposite each other close to the ground.
