Founded in 2017, Plays in Place is a theatre company that creates new site-specific plays in partnership with museums, historic spaces, and other institutions. They have extensive experience bringing historic stories and sites to life in ways that deeply engage audiences. They are currently at work on projects in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut and are consulting with the Texas Histor

ic Commission on a series of potential projects. Past and current partners and projects include Mount Auburn Cemetery (The America Plays, The Nature Plays, Moonlight Abolitionists), Revolutionary Spaces—Boston’s Old State House & Old South Meeting House (Cato & Dolly, I Am This Place, Scipio’s Balcony, Imagining The Age of Phillis), Roosevelt-Campobello International Park (Beloved Island: Windows on Campobello), the National Park Service (Suffrage in Black & White), Old North Illuminated (Revolution’s Edge), MassBike (The Kittie Knox Plays), Historic Northampton (Pulling at the Roots), and the Preservation Society of Newport County.

Wishing a wonderful closing to the whole team at Loyalty or Liberty: Tales from Revolutionary Newport!

What a beautiful place to stage plays, outdoors on the grounds of Hunter House, overlooking the Bay. Developed through archival research, three original plays unearth the layered histories of Hunter House during the Revolutionary War (1778-1781). Seven characters whose lives interacted with the home navigate slavery and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, love and honor. Personal secrets complicate political upheaval.

Their overlapping footsteps reveal how history never really leaves a place.

We have officially kicked off production on The Hull/Hawley Plays at Historic Northampton ! Actors, playwrights, designers, historians, producers and our production team gathered in the historic Shepherd Barn to read and discuss these beautiful and moving plays, considering two 18th Century Northampton residents as their subjects: Bathsheba Hull and Joseph Hawley.

Join Historic Northampton's museum educator Emma Bresnan for a 45-minute gallery talk about our current exhibit: Slavery and Freedom in Northampton, 1654-1783.

Beyond what you can read in the exhibit on your own, you'll learn more about:
* the lives of people who were enslaved in Northampton
* their choices about family and freedom
* the legal arrangements that kept slavery in place
* how enslaved labor fueled Northampton and the regional economy.

No pre-registration necessary.
