The ransom note vibe felt appropriate. This is one of the in-between pages in my Banned Words book.

People look at me funny when I say late-stage capitalism is coming for ALL of us. But, it's true. It's profits over people and billionaire greed. Yachts and bunkers for them, scraps for everyone else.

Capitalism is the system that created for-profit healthcare and for-profit hospitals. It's where some goober in a cubicle can deny you life-saving medical treatment to save the insurance company a buck.

It's not moving the needle on minimum wage while CEOs rake in record profits.

It's funding wars and genocides while not addressing the very real and very catastrophic impacts of climate change.

It's mergers and acquisitions and buying media outlets so you can push propaganda.

It's propping up the NRA instead of prioritizing the lives and well-being of our children.

We are literally in a prison of our own making. It doesn't have to be like this. We deserve better. Our kids deserve better. We are failing them at every level.

It's time for something different. But we have to want it badly enough to take bold, sustained action.

A couple weeks ago, I made the decision to remove my personal profile from FB. I originally planned to keep my business page, however, because I have a large number of followers here and I've dedicated almost 2 decades to content creation and relationship development.

Buuuttttt...

If you delete your personal FB profile and it's tied to a business page, the business page gets deleted, too. So, I started the process of privatizing my personal account, removing all of the groups I created, unfriending all my friends, and making it harder for people to connect with me. A tedious process. And, from what I have discovered, a largely ineffective one.

The algoritm is still the algoritm. And the algoritm takes way more than it gives.

Soooooo....

In a moment of clarity late last night, I decided I am making a clean break and removing this business page from FB as well. It's a big gamble and incredibly risky for this small business owner. It might alienate me and be a costly move on my part, but it feels aligned. And the more I think about it, the lighter I feel. (*I'll have a lot more to say about this in my newsletter.)

Everything that is wrong with this platform and the people that own it are still wrong on a business page. I can't stand on principle on my personal page and turn a blind eye on a business page. Every time I log onto this app, I feel icky. I want to get back to social media-free, ad-free, AI-free modes of communicating. I want to write newsletters and create blog posts and make videos in my new online classroom. I think this decision will ultimately be the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.

I am so grateful for ALL of the support over the years. And, if you feel as though you want to be present for whatever happens next, you have *loads* of ways of staying engaged:

📌 You can go to my Website for updates, to sign up for my newsletter, learn more about classes, and read my blog whenever I update it (hopefully more now that I'm leaving this space). www.jennpipe.com
📌 You can follow me over on instagram () until and unless I decide to leave that platform, too.
📌 You can visit my new Teachable classroom for online offerings, etc. https://jenn-pipe.teachable.com/p/home
📌 If you're local, you can always reach out for coffee dates, art dates, and in-person hangs. I'd love that!

I'm giving myself a week to do some housekeeping and then my accounts will be deleted. See you on the other side, maybe.

Stay safe out there! 🩷

Here's the next word in my Banned Words book.

SOIL POLLUTION.

Absurd that this phrase is on their list, but when we look at these things, we have to think big picture. Removing language = removing accountability and culpability. It's a green light for corporations to poison the land. It's a middle finger to climate change. It impacts our food supply. And we all suffer for it.

This sea of problems we are drowning in is of our own making. We (and the powers that be) are failing our children at literally every single turn.

We need something better.
We deserve something better.

I desperately needed some good news today.

Maybe you do, too.

So, I opened up registration for my brand new, first-ever course on Teachable. We officially start the week of October 12, but I'm going to drip some content in there before then.

This is how I help and heal. Myself and others. I hope you'll join me. 🩵

I did some work in my Banned Words book today, which led me to some creative decisions:

✂️ I'm going to type each word onto a vintage photo. I thought about some other creative options, but I love how both the typewriter and the antique photos are creative nods to our backwards trajectory.
✂️ I'm going to attempt to use minimal supplies; some paint, stencils and/or stamps, collage bits, posca pens, and maybe some washi tape.
✂️ I am *not* going to work in alphabetical order. I'm going to let the photos (and maybe the news cycle) guide me. I don't think the project loses any of its punch by working non-alphabetically. It also lets me be more fluid when current events influence a word choice.

The first Banned Word in my book is FEMALE. Imagine being such a thin-skinned, beta male that you're threatened by words like this?! It's more than that, though.

They want erasure.
Of language.
Of culture.
Of community.
Of history.
Of our legitimacy.

This book is an artistic work of non-fiction and an act of resistance, both. May it educate you, ignite a fire in your belly, and fuel the rebellion in your soul. 🔥

My first online course through Teachable is coming!! It's going to be all about charting your course. Recalibrating and doubling back when necessary. Thinking about who you are (and why) along with who you might still want to be. Discovering disconnects. Course correction. Deep self-reflection and connection.

It feels like I need this in my life right now--maybe you do, too. This is going to be a deeply personal journey. You're going to be mapping your way forward. Literally and figuratively. I'm going to be doing the work right alongside you, and there will be a community of kindreds cheering you on if you need it.

I'm putting together the curriculum and working on all the behind-the-scenes details. Registration will be opening soon. Start date in mid-late October. I truly hope you'll join me and help spread the word. 🩷

My mom and I went to the Brimfield Fair today. We came upon this ray of sunshine who was selling upcycled/thrifted clothing. I fell in love with this oversized flannel--he had removed its sleeves and embellished it with hearts and whimsy.

So, I bought it.

I handed him the money, he handed me the shirt, and then he looked back down at his hand where he noticed that I had paid full price.

Him: "Wait! You paid full price! You didn't even try to haggle. I would have taken less."

Me: "I'm an artist, and you're an artist. I know how valuable your time is, and I know how much time, energy, and cost goes into making things with your hands. I'll never haggle with another artist--your items are priced fairly, and you deserve to be paid for your time."

Still aghast that I wasn't going to haggle (and because he was a good soul), he then tried to offer my mom a shirt for free. She paid for hers, too.

I wish all good things for this guy. He shared that he makes these shirts to "try to stay happy."

Shop small. Support artists. Stop haggling and asking for deals from people who are trying to make an honest living by adding beauty to the world.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Spent some time working in my Banned Words book today. I haven't gotten to any of the actual banned words yet because I'm trying to decide (overthinking?) if I want a consistent way of depicting the words (ex: stamps, tape transfers, ransom letters), or if I want to just wing it each time and see how the spirit moves me.

So, right now, I'm working with some of the imagery in the beginning of the book. I love how the illustrations are guiding me along--it feels very aligned.

The current administration's erasure of language is deliberate, cruel, and calculated.

📢 They outlaw words in order to rewrite history.
📢 They erase vocabulary in an attempt to erase identity.
📢 They eliminate terminology so they can control policy.

This Banned Words book is part passion project, part resistance, and part activism. In it, I will highlight the words they are trying to erase, while also trying to capture the historical significance of the moment.

I feel called to create a visual record of these times. To create a historically accurate anthology. To honor all that they are trying to erase. To support the vulnerable and the marginalized. To have an outlet for my rage and pain. To share these pages as an act of artivism. (Flip through in last slide)

Maybe this inspires you to act/create/release in your own unique way. I truly hope it does. This is a time when artists need to get to work. And when everyday people need to become everyday heroes.

These are dark, dark times. It's going to take all of us to fight back in myriad ways.
