Don McLean was born today, in 1945.

"American Pie" runs 8 minutes and 33 seconds. Radio stations refused to play it because it was too long. It went to #1 and stayed there for four weeks.

He has never fully explained what the lyrics mean. He has said the song is about the loss of innocence in America. Beyond that, he's not telling.

"The day the music died" has been debated for 50 years. Everyone has a theory. Nobody agrees.

October 1, 1987. The Coconut Grove, Los Angeles. Roy Orbison stepped on stage for what would become one of the most celebrated concert films ever recorded.

The backing band that night included Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt, k.d. lang, Jackson Browne, and J.D. Souther. None of them were there as headliners or special guests angling for attention. They were there because when the call came, every single one of them said the same thing — Roy Orbison was the reason they had become musicians.

He performed Oh, Pretty Woman. Crying. In Dreams. Only the Lonely. A voice that sounded like nothing else in the history of American music.

Fourteen months later, on December 6, 1988, Roy Orbison died of a heart attack at his home in Tennessee. He was 52 years old.

That night at the Coconut Grove — nobody in that room knew it was almost the last time. It almost always is.

On this day in 1971, Walt Disney World opened its gates in Orlando, Florida for the first time.

It had taken four years to build and cost $400 million. Walt Disney himself had died five years earlier in December 1966, he never saw a single brick laid. His brother Roy, who had spent years trying to retire, came back specifically to see the project through. Roy died just three months after opening day.

10,000 people came through the gates on that first morning. The parking lot ran out of space before noon.

October 1, 1933. James Brown was born in Barnwell, South Carolina.

He grew up in poverty so extreme that he wore burlap potato sacks to school because his family couldn't afford clothes. He said everything he became came from having nothing and refusing to accept it.

He invented funk. He redefined soul. He influenced hip-hop before hip-hop had a name, sampled more than almost any other artist in history. Michael Jackson watched him perform and changed the way he moved forever. Prince watched him and built an entire career on what he learned.

He was arrested. He served time. He came back. Every single time, harder and louder than before.

Say It Loud. I Got You. Get Up Offa That Thing. Papa's Got a Brand New Bag. Please Please Please. He wrote them, performed them, owned them.

October 2, 1971. Soul Train entered national syndication across America.

Don Cornelius had launched it a year earlier on a local Chicago television station. He borrowed $400 to produce the first episode. The concept was deceptively simple: Black artists, Black dancers, Black culture, on television every week, at a time when mainstream American TV barely acknowledged that any of it existed.

James Brown. Marvin Gaye. Aretha Franklin. Al Green. Stevie Wonder. Donna Summer. Michael Jackson. Whitney Houston. Prince. Every major Black artist in America came through that studio at some point over the next three decades.

It ran for 35 years. 1,117 episodes. Don Cornelius opened and closed every single show the same way: "Love, peace, and soul."

Today's song recommendation, in memory of Marv Tarplin, who passed away on this day in 2011.

Tracks of My Tears. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. 1965.

Marv Tarplin was the guitarist for the Miracles and the man who wrote the opening guitar riff, one of the most recognized musical openings in the history of popular music. He wrote it alone with his guitar, not knowing what it would become. He co-wrote several of the Miracles' biggest hits alongside Smokey Robinson and William "Mickey" Stevenson.

In 1999, the US Library of Congress added the recording to the National Recording Registry, deemed culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant. John Lennon called it one of his favorite songs of all time. Linda Ronstadt covered it. Bryan Ferry covered it. It has never stopped being played.

On this day in 1959, The Twilight Zone premiered on CBS. Rod Serling created it, wrote 92 of its 156 episodes, and appeared on screen to introduce every single one.

Each episode was a different story, different characters, different world, connected only by Serling's voice and his belief that television could say things no other medium would dare.

He used science fiction and fantasy to talk about racism, war, conformity, and the cost of being human at a time when American television was too afraid to address any of it directly.

The show ran for five seasons. It has never left the air since 1959. Streaming, cable, syndication, somewhere right now, someone is watching The Twilight Zone for the first time.

October 2, 1951. Gordon Matthew Sumner was born in Wallsend, England. You know him as Sting.

Before he was a musician, he was a schoolteacher, teaching English to schoolchildren in Newcastle. He said the experience made him a better songwriter because teaching forces you to make complicated things simple. He never forgot that.

With The Police, he wrote some of the most deceptively complex pop songs ever recorded. Every Breath You Take sounds like a love song. It's about obsession and control. Roxanne sounds like a rock anthem. It's about desperation and longing. Don't Stand So Close to Me sounds like a catchy single. It references Vladimir Nabokov's Lo**ta.

When he went solo, he studied jazz theory, then 16th-century lute music from John Dowland. He said he had to empty himself of everything he knew to find something genuinely new.

Fields of Gold. Englishman in New York. Shape of My Heart. Desert Rose. He kept finding it.

On this day in 1995, Mariah Carey's "Fantasy" debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first female artist in history to debut directly at the top spot.

She was 25 years old. The song samples Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" from 1981. The music video was filmed at Rye Playland, an amusement park in New York she had visited as a child. She said she wanted it to feel like a daydream.

It became her ninth number one hit in the United States and stayed at the top for eight weeks. It changed the music industry permanently; before Mariah, major artists simply did not debut at number one on release day. She opened that door.

Before Fantasy, that simply didn't happen.
