My name is Melissa von Baeyer and I am one of the few (several hundred) people in the United States who suffer from schizoaffective disorder -- a disease similar to schizophrenia. It is partly genetically induced and partly from nurturing.

I discovered pottery while I was at Hopewell farm in Ohio and I absolutely loved it. I do wheel work and slab work. I am currently trying to perfect my coffee mugs, which come out differently all the time. I am learning to glaze them in nice decorative fashion.

I would like to do clay work which people ask me to do for them, so if you have a request or a suggestion please write to Melissa at [email protected] and I will try to accomodate you.

Potters are magicians who can transform an inert lump of clay into a useful and beautiful implement, like a bowl, vase, or sculpture.

How?

The art of pottery encompasses a wide range of techniques. My mother, Melissa Williams, shapes on the throwing wheel. Wheel throwing is a process where clay is centered on a potter's wheel and shaped by skilled hands and tools. Melissa then adds glazes, which are liquid coatings applied to the surface of ceramic objects before firing. Glazes add color, texture, and depth.

Why?

Melissa, who is living at a long-term therapeutic farm community in Ohio for adults with mental illness, finds herself most days in the on-site art studio engaging with clay and the pottery process. Pottery, for Melissa, offers a unique avenue for self-expression and creativity, as well as mindfulness and relaxation. Opening this etsy shop has given her a sense of purpose and hope.

In a world often saturated with digital experiences, the tactile and organic nature of pottery serves as a reminder of the importance of slowing down, engaging with one's hands, and appreciating the beauty of handmade objects.
