Recently I finished this oil painting as a commission, and it marks an exciting step forward as I continue to do more work in oils alongside my colored pencil pieces. Each medium pushes me in a different way, and this piece felt especially meaningful from start to finish. Oils ask for patience, trust, and bravery, and Iโm so grateful I was given the chance to create something so meaningful with this medium.
The client asked that I stay true to the muted, time-worn tones of the original reference photo of a son in a joyful moment with his mother that has since passed on. This painting was meant to hold the softness of that moment; and it was given to the clients husband as a birthday gift.
After delivery, she shared this with me, and this is exactly why I offer commissions:
"I canโt thank you enough for the beautiful painting. (He) loves it. He sat there looking at it for a moment, his eyes filled and all he could do was cry. He hung it in his man cave.โ
I donโt take moments like this lightly. Being trusted with someoneโs memories, emotions, and love is something I hold with so much gratitude.
So many of my commissions are created as gifts, and I have to keep them quiet to avoid spoiling the surprise. ๐คซ This has been in the works since August, getting to show the finished piece once itโs been given- and knowing itโs been received with such love; makes the process feel complete and incredibly rewarding. Being able to share these moments with you all, after holding them close for so long, is something I truly appreciate.
Thank you to every person who supports my work, encourages me to keep creating, and believes in this path as much as I do. ๐๐จ
