Dear Facebook Friends,
The world lost a dear friend and colleague this month: Richard Klein, the former principal of New York City’s LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, and the founding Provost of the High School and College programs of the New World School of the Arts in Miami. I graduated from the High School of Performing Arts (HSPA: the “Fame” school) in 1962, which later became LaGuardia under Principal Klein when he merged the HSPA with Music and Art, creating the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of the Performing and Visual Arts. It was Richard that who showed up at one of my classes at the Juilliard School, sat down and watched the entire class, and then convinced me to apply for the position of Dean of Dance at NWSA. A month later I interviewed for, and then accepted, the position of founding Dean of Dance at NWSA. This was a life-changing and wonderful event in my life.
I was blessed to have two dance educator mentors: Martha Hill at the Juilliard School, and Richard Klein at New World School of the Arts. I write this tribute to Richard Klein to thank him for helping thousands of visual and performing arts students in New York and Miami to become better citizens, and make major contributions to the quality of life for so many people. I also thank him for bringing me to Miami and giving me the freedom to create a program that I’m very proud of, paving the way for dance students to achieve their dreams as leaders in the dance world as dancers and choreographers. And let’s not forget all the dance students who became doctors, lawyers, physical therapist, surgeons and dance educators! Students who study the arts learn to think “outside the box,” making them successful, no matter what they do. Richard, your life’s work is being carried on by all those that you affected in the arts. Thank you, Richard, for trusting in me. RIP Danny
