Espace Expression is saddened by the passing of Japanese artist Haruhiko Sunagawa (1946-2022). Our dearest condolences to the family.

We had the honor of exhibiting his artwork in the exhibit ‘Homage to Denise René. Past, Present, and Future of a Vision.’ in 2013-2014.

The work exhibited:
Spirale l, 2006
Wood, stone, glass
86 x 70 x 200 cm

“Haruhiko Sunagawa studied physics at the University of Sciences in Tokyo, then drawing and painting at Hammersmith College of Arts in London. He receive the Bourdelle sculpture award in 1991. Haruhiko Sunagawa’s work is focused on the representation of a straight line and geometric shapes in space. Through the representation of geometric shapes, dots and lines, the artist tries to recreate empty space. He uses notions that don’t exist in the nature, in order to create a completely new natural space, because as the artist explains, geometry etymologically means the measurement of the earth.” Words by

"Carlos Cruz-Diez:
Chromosaturation" illuminates Diez’s investigations into the ever-changing and ephemeral nature of color. Considered a key pioneer of kinetic and optical art, Carlos Cruz Die's experimentations with color and sensory perception anticipated many of the relational and participatory tendencies of contemporary art. Acquired for PAMM's collection in 2020 with funds
provided by Jorge M. Pérez, Chromosaturation is an immersive environment that reimagines color as an
embodied experience. Through his experimental use of light, movement, space, and viewer interactivity, Cruz-Diez encourages"an awareness of the instability of reality" while proposing a new definition of art as a field of active participation.
