Thank you Sioned Williams for this positive review of my latest Bach collection: "Bach for All Harpists: Six graded pieces for beginner to advanced" in the latest issue of the United Kingdom Harp Association magazine.

Here are a few excerpts:
“In Laura Sherman’s work, we need only look to scholarship and research for an end result of a thoroughly playable body of music by J.S. Bach…

By taking each strand of the compositional whole of Bach’s music into consideration, the works have been suitably transcribed so that not only harpists with an enviable degree of technical refinement can play them, but players of differing abilities can also enjoy these Bach pieces…

Please do take a look at Laura’s website www.busytuning.com for an insight into the life of a multi-talented harpist who has embraced music at its best in so many guises.”

New transcription, new composer! Johann Kaspar Ferdinand Fischer's Chaconne in A Minor for intermediate pedal harp.

JFK Fischer (1656-1746) was considered by J.S. Bach’s biographer, Johann Nikolaus Forkel (1749-1818) to be one of the best composers for keyboard music during the Baroque period. But because many of his compositions did not survive, Fischer is not as well-known as the younger J.S. Bach (1685-1750). Fischer was responsible for bringing the French Baroque style to Germany and also made innovations to the Baroque keyboard and orchestra suite forms. Bach and Handel were familiar with his music and borrowed from it, as was common practice at the time.

First up is his gorgeous Chaconne in A Minor which is the penultimate movement of the “Melpomene” suite in his nine-suite collection for keyboard, Musicalischer Parnassus. The Chaconne is great for the intermediate-level harpist and is perfect for recitals. The expressive harmonic progression and stepwise bass line beautifully support the moving melodic variations in the top voice. And the fluid keyboard writing works beautifully on the harp. (Video coming soon!)

I hope you enjoy this new transcription for pedal harp. Let me know what you think!

Bach's five "Lute Suites" are now instantly available on Harp Column Music! 🎶

No more waiting for the post to play these gorgeous gems on the pedal harp. My critical performance editions also include extensive notes about Baroque style and ornamentation.

Bach's Lute Suites were included in the American Harp Society's 2023 competition repertoire and are excellent additions to any recital program. Feel free to reach out if you have questions or are interested in an online lesson.

Not sure which one to start with? 🤔 Here's a quick intro to each:

BWV 995: Based on Bach’s version for cello, this piece is less contrapuntal than his other suites and has a wide variety of styles in the movements. An excellent intro into Bach's lute suites.

BWV 996: This work features a challenging opening movement, along with several lyrical dance movements including the famous “Bourée.”

BWV 997: With its rare da-capo fugue, glorious sarabande, and two versions of the concluding double movement (in different registers), this work is richly rewarding.

BWV 998: Another good one to start with because of the arpeggiated prelude and grand da capo fugue. The last movement is thrilling to play as well.

BWV 1006a (two versions transposed to Eb Major and Db Major): Perhaps the most well-known of the Bach’s lute suites, it has a sonorous opening movement and numerous, distinctive dance movements. This edition has been transposed to both Db major (to allow more resonance on the harp) and Eb Major (for those wanting to stay closer to the original key of E Major.)
