George Bellows was born on this day in 1882. Dempsey and Firpo, one of Bellows’s most ambitious paintings, captures a pivotal moment in the September 14, 1923, prizefight between American heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey and his Argentine rival Luis Angel Firpo. The frenzy lasted less than four minutes, Firpo going to the floor nine times and Dempsey twice. Although Dempsey was the eventual victor, the artist chose to represent the dramatic moment when Firpo knocked his opponent out of the ring with a tremendous blow to the jaw.

Aquí les dejamos una breve frase del artista hablando de su exposición en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes en La Habana que inaugura este sábado 26 y estará en vista hasta agosto:

"Cardinales trata básicamente, sobre las geografías, las físicas y las mentales, los arraigos, los lugares donde se habita, por decision personal o no, el enfrentamiento del individuo a otras culturas y espacios, siempre llevados por condiciones sociales, económicas o políticas del individuo o del grupo... La exposición es una especie de reseña autobiográfica pero que al mismo tiempo toca la realidad de muchos seres humanos."
