The Bird Road Art District, originally an industrial area by the railroad tracks, began attracting artists in the 1980s; rows of slanted warehouses were converted into artists' studios by the year 2000 the area was officially designated as an art district by Miami-Dade County. Today the Bird Road Art District continues to attract artists and enjoys a unique fusion of studios, alternative art space

s, galleries
and art schools along with a mix of professional offices and a quaint retail section creating one of Miami's more unique
industrial landscapes. The Bird Road Art District is conveniently located just off of the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and Bird Road (SW 40th Street), BRAD extends south to SW 48th Street. The majority of the studios are located off of SW 75 Ave & SW 74 Ave, between SW 41st and SW 48th Street. Bird Road Art Walk:
The Bird Road Art Walk was recently named "Miami's Best Art Walk 2011" by Miami New Times. The member-powered organization promotes and funds experiences that bring artists, enthusiast and collectors together. Events include the monthly Bird Road Art Walk, which features its member artists, galleries, alternative spaces and creative businesses. Uldis López: Al cabo de dos años de estar en San Agustín, Florida, me voy para Miami. Los amigos Joaquín Badajoz, un crítico importante que ahora está en Nueva York, y Arnaldo Simón, que en ese momento trabajaba como diseñador en El Nuevo Herald, me ayudaron con todos los trámites de emigración. Estuve ayudando a un primo mío trabajando como electricista y le pinté unos murales a una prima en el lugar donde me estaba quedando. A través de un familiar pude conocer entonces a un señor que decidió invertir en la producción de mi obra, específicamente en las esculturas en bronce, y por ahí comienza el período de la fundición; no este proyecto de R.U.N. Art Foundry, sino la producción de un grupo de piezas personales.
Artcrónica: ¿Sentiste alguna añoranza tras haber emigrado?
Uldis López: Al principio uno siempre extraña porque deja algunos afectos detrás. Pero, bueno, al año de estar aquí vino mi madre y, más adelante, mi actual esposa. Mis abuelos murieron antes de que yo partiera, por lo que no tuve que vivir ese difícil momento a distancia. Tengo todavía un hijo en Cuba. A los tres años de estar acá fui a la isla por primera vez, y es ahí donde me reconecto con el maestro Pedro Pablo Oliva y comienzo a hacerle las esculturas… Al principio siempre es difícil; uno añora, aunque no quiera, aunque deteste esos procesos que deja atrás y que ocurren en la isla. Al día de hoy pienso que no hubiera podido lograr allá lo que hoy tengo aquí.
