Zoo Miami

Zoo Miami One of the biggest, one of the most unique and, definitely, one of the best zoos in the world.

Zoo Miami (also known as The Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens) is the largest and oldest zoological garden in Florida, and the only tropical zoo in the continental United States. The unique climate in South Florida allows us to keep a wide variety of animals from Asia, Australia and Africa, representing a broad mix of species that is unlike any other zoo in the country. Our animals are group

ed according to their geographic territories, with species that live together peacefully in the wild placed in exhibits together here at the zoo. Our trees, foliage and even our soil are matched as closely as possible to the native habitats of our animals.

Today we celebrate the world’s tallest land animal and a sneak peek at the future of our Giraffe Feeding Station! 🦒 The upcoming renovation will create a more immersive, accessible, and enriching experience for guests while supporting our mission of conservation and education.

Giraffes are facing silent declines across parts of their range, with habitat loss and fragmentation contributing to population challenges. World Giraffe Day is an important reminder of the conservation work needed to protect these gentle giants.

Stay tuned next week for an exciting update on our giraffe feeding station construction!

A year ago, history was made at Zoo Miami! 🐢🎉 Last year, our beloved Galapagos tortoise, "Goliath", became a first-time father when one egg from a clutch of 48 successfully hatched on June 4, 2025. Fast forward one year, and both Goliath and his offspring are thriving!

At an incredible 135 years old, becoming a dad was a remarkable milestone for Goliath, but it was also a landmark moment for Zoo Miami. This hatchling represents the first Galapagos tortoise ever hatched in our Zoo's history, making it a truly unforgettable achievement for both our animal care team and conservation efforts. 💚🐢.

As we celebrate Father's Day, we're giving a special shoutout to Goliath on his second Father's Day and his first full year of fatherhood. Happy Father's Day to all the amazing dads out there!

Although it wasn’t officially named our national bird until late 2024, the American Bald Eagle has long held deep roots in our nation’s history. Native American tribes have revered the bald eagle for generations as a symbol of courage, strength, and bravery, and its feathers are gifted as a sign of honor. 🦅 This longstanding tradition and reverence are supported through the National Eagle Repository, which we are proud to contribute to.

Here at Zoo Miami, we’re proud to care for these incredible birds while also creating an environment that supports local wildlife. The final two photos in this carousel, captured by our own Tiffany Moore, feature wild bald eagles visiting our grounds! It’s a meaningful reminder that the habitats surrounding our zoo provide a safe and welcoming space for native species. 💚

Protecting bald eagles and the ecosystems they depend on helps preserve not only an iconic species but also the natural spaces that allow wildlife to thrive for generations to come.

Sea Turtle Team Update 🐢🌊

Welcome to a tiny intermission of our Sea Turtle Orchestra concert! 🎶 Three of our orchestra members — Mandolin, Ocarina, and Bassoon — have returned to the deep blue sea. Who knows? Maybe they’re already teaching their ocean friends a new sea shanty. 🌊

Every orchestra needs a unique instrument to keep the melody going, so let us introduce you to Kazoo! This juvenile hawksbill sea turtle arrived with an amputated front left flipper and a whole lot of pizazz. After graduating from our hatchling tank, Kazoo has moved into a full-size tank in anticipation of a future release.

We also received an urgent call from FWC about a sub-adult green sea turtle, Ukulele, who was behaving erratically, flipping upside down and swimming with his head down. After several weeks of intensive supportive care, our team made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize Ukulele due to a poor prognosis.

Meanwhile, Oboe, Piccolo, Bugle, and Balalaika continue to receive care for their FP tumors and are doing great. Cello is also still in our care, with some clear blue skies on the horizon. 🐢✨
