Ever wondered who checks a ship’s technical standards—and who can perform statutory surveys on behalf of a Flag Administration?

A Classification Society develops technical rules and conducts class surveys to verify that ships meet its classification requirements.

A Recognised Organisation (RO) is an organization authorized by a Flag Administration to carry out specified statutory surveys and certification on its behalf.

🔹 Class = Classification requirements
🔹 RO = Delegated statutory work
🔹 Flag Administration = Authorizes and oversees the RO

A Classification Society can also act as an RO—but only when authorized by the relevant Flag Administration.

For mariners in the Northern Hemisphere, a tropical cyclone is divided into a Dangerous Semicircle and a Navigable Semicircle based on the storm’s direction of travel.

⚓ The forward-right quadrant is generally the most dangerous, where storm motion adds to the rotational wind.
🌊 In the dangerous semicircle, mariners use the starboard-bow wind rule; in the navigable semicircle, the starboard-quarter rule is used as general emergency guidance.

These are general navigation principles—not a substitute for avoiding the cyclone and following official weather warnings and routing advice.
