Aorist and co-present ’s Effets de Soir in the Faena Project Room. The video series continues the artist’s ongoing focus on nature, pictorial traditions, and new technology-centered artistic practices.

Effets de Soir references the natural phenomena visible at dusk and dawn, when lights and shadows, warm and cold tones, fade into one another – an impression many artists, from Monet to Van Gogh, have attempted to transpose on canvas. At the core of Effets de Soir are ultra-high-resolution photographs of flowers from the lush gardens of Chateau de Chaumont-sur-Loire, a 10th-century French Castle, shot at night under artificial spotlights.

Miami Art Week 2022 is around the corner! Expect nothing less than what you experienced in 2021.

Commissioned by Aorist for Art Week Miami 2021, presented ‘Machine Hallucinations: Coral’, a unique, site-specific, data-based sculpture on Faena Beach. This visual experience, based on nearly 2 million photographs of underwater corals, extrapolates on the natural forms by processing them through a GAN machine learning AI algorithm. The resulting installation – a 'machine hallucination' – allowed the audience to be immersed in a sense of underwater space, while physically surrounded by water and sea creatures on the beach, further merging the beauty of real with the sublimity of artistic imagination.

In a historic moment, Machine Hallucinations: Coral Dream sold at a live auction for $851,130, and was the highlight of Miami Art Week 2021.

Although technology has changed the world, it has not changed humanity. Technology is the result of mankind taking an active role to speed up our evolution…. But the real evolution comes by change from within.

The work of Drift .drift occupies a unique place at the interface between tech art, performance, and biodesign. Their work focuses on the connections between everything living and nonliving.

"We are big dreamers. We try to visualise realities that seem impossible, and to work with emerging technologies to help realize this dream. We'd like to be on the forefront of what will be possible in the future and make work that hopefully inspires a positive version of the future." - DRIFT

"Everything can be simulated in animation and virtual reality, but we think there is an importance in creating real experiences that you can feel and see with your own eyes in the real world, not only through a screen," - Lonneke Gordijn. .drift

Alongside the 2022 Venice Biennale, Aorist commissioned DRIFT .drift to create a new transformative work, Social Sacrifice. It was the first ever indoor aerial drone performance, featuring original music by , and was hosted -academy Ocean Space.

Social Sacrifice mimicked the algorithms created by schools of fish which “swam" through the Church of San Lorenzo every evening during the opening two weeks of the Venice Biennale. Flying overhead above the audience, the drones dance and battle one another, their movements accentuated through light and color. Each drone has its own light source, with the “predator drones” represented in red and the school of fish represented in blue. The intensity of these lights are influenced by the density of the group — brighter and stronger when closer together, fainter and weaker when more diffuse.

Inspired by the collective intelligence and cooperation exhibited by schools of fish when facing a predator and highlights the way this kind of adaptive swarming behavior leads to successful problem solving in uncertain circumstances. For DRIFT, these insights from nature offer clues as to how we might tackle the myriad challenges we face today — from the global pandemic to climate change to geopolitical conflicts.

At the core of DRIFT’s .drift work is the relationship between man, nature, and technology. With the use of technology, DRIFT manifests the phenomena and hidden properties of nature in order to learn from the Earth’s underlying mechanisms and re-establish our connection to it.

DRIFT’s works of art illuminate parallels between man-made and natural structures through deconstructive, interactive, and innovative processes. Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta oftentimes directly apply elements from nature or forms derived from it.

All individual artworks have the ability to transform spaces. DRIFT brings people, space, and nature on to the same frequency, uniting audiences with experiences that inspire a reconnection to our planet.

Dutch born visual artists Lonneke Gordijin (b.1980) and Ralph Nauta (b.1978) founded the multidisciplinary team of 64, Studio DRIFT, in 2007. DRIFT have been exploring the parallels between man-made structures and natural phenomena in order to reaffirm and establish humanity’s connection to mother nature. The installations take form as digitised natural phenomena. They manifest the hidden properties of nature with the use of technology to learn from the Earth’s natural mechanisms.

In their installations DRIFT appropriate these natural phantasms (such as using drones to mimic the flight pattern of Starling birds) in order to encourage their viewers to explore their perceptions of reality and their own connections to the natural world. DRIFT has been internationally recognized, exhibiting in both private and public spaces. They have been shown at prestigious gallery spaces and museums such as The Shed in New York in 2021, the Stedelijk Museum in 2018 and the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2009 and 2015. DRIFT was also awarded Dezeen designer of the year (2019) the Arte Laguna Prize, Venice (2014). .drift
