We offer a space for the Caribbean & its diaspora to understand themselves through film.

Founded in 2014 and based in Miami, Florida, Third Horizon is dedicated to developing, producing, exhibiting and distributing films from the Caribbean and its diasporas. Third Horizon’s flagship initiative, Third Horizon Film Festival (THFF), is an annual celebration of cinema from the Caribbean, its diaspora and beyond. In particular, THFF seeks to highlight work by filmmakers and artists who are interested in both the aesthetic and political dimensions of cinema, and who seek to go beyond imitative approaches to cinematic form, exploring radical and resourceful ways of representing the unique complexity of the Caribbean experience. THFF is proudly supported by Knight Foundation and JustFilms / Ford Foundation.

As we continue to our community film screening series, join us for an afternoon and evening of creative development, more Haitian cinema, and conversation featuring filmmakers Al’ikens Plancher and Edson Jean.

The afternoon begins with Deck & Sip™, a fun, guided workshop where filmmakers and multidisciplinary creatives can make real progress on their pitch decks. Bring your laptop, a creative project or project idea, and any notes, images, references, or written materials you already have. Al’Ikens and Edson will guide participants through pitch-deck structure, project language, visual thinking, and practical tools for transforming loose materials into a clear creative presentation.

At 6pm, the program continues with Sinema Chat, a curated screening spotlighting the work of Haitian filmmaker Al’ikens Plancher:

Third Horizon Film Festival 2027

It's official! Third Horizon Film Festival is back for its ninth edition, and our Call for Submissions is now open.

Last year, we entered a cocoon year—a time to pause, reflect, and thoughtfully strengthen the foundation of our work. Today, we're excited to step into what's ahead.

From June 17th–20th, 2027, Third Horizon returns to Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and Koubek Center - Miami Dade College with four days of critically curated Caribbean cinema, conversations, performances, and community.

As a festival dedicated to uplifting Caribbean and diaspora filmmakers—and films that center Caribbean experiences—we're excited to welcome a new slate of stories from across the region and its diaspora.

As always:
• No submission fees.
• All accepted filmmakers and artists are paid for presenting their work.

Our Call for Submissions is open now through October 31st.

Next up in our community film screening series, we turn our focus to the work of Haitian filmmaker and visual artist Samuel Suffren. Agwe (2021), Dreams Like Paper Boats (2024), and Blue Heart (2025) will be presented together as Waves in the Eyes: A Trilogy of Short Films—each having previously screened as official selections of Third Horizon Film Festival.

Inspired by the story of Suffren’s father, who embarked on a boat journey with 22 other Haitians in 1981 in search of the American Dream, the trilogy explores migration, memory, longing, and the lives of those who remain. Together, these films form a deeply personal portrait of Haiti, reflecting the beauty, resilience, and quiet strength of its people.

We’re excited to present, in partnership with the Miami Film Festival and the support from our partners, Koubek Center and Cinemóvil, a special program on August 1: Todo parecía posible (Everything Seemed Possible), a History of the Puerto Rican Film Unit plus a talkback and workshop with filmmaker Ramón Rivera Moret.

Ramón Rivera Moret’s compelling archival documentary, Todo parecía posible (Everything Seemed Possible), revisits a utopian chapter in Puerto Rico’s history through dozens of short films made in rural communities from the late 1940s to the 1960s. Rivera Moret explores a visionary chapter in Puerto Rico’s history through the lens of the Division of Community Education’s ground-breaking film unit.
Born from Governor Luis Muñoz Marín’s Operation Bootstrap in the late 1940s, the unit produced dozens of short films with and for rural communities, aiming to educate, empower, and inspire social change. These poetic documentaries defied simple propaganda, often challenging the government’s industrial push and rural displacement. Blending family memories with rare archival footage, Rivera Moret crafts a moving tribute to grassroots creativity, resistance, and the enduring spirit of the Puerto Rican people.

Preceding the screening, Ramón Rivera Moret will engage in a workshop—aimed at filmmakers, scholars and students, as well as the general public—that focuses on working with heritage film material. Drawing upon Todo parecía posible and the short films of the Puerto Rican film unit, Rivera Moret will explore the ways in which archival film footage, more than simply providing a window onto the past, can be effectively repurposed to tell stories with a contemporary resonance.
