A citywide initiative invited Miami residents to distill their connection to the city into the traditional 14-line sonnet format, resulting in a massive wave of civic participation. Sonnet Boom: Love Poems for Miami, was launched in January by Elevate Cities and Elevate Miami, in partnership with O, Miami and SWWIM. The public response to the entries was equally enthusiastic, generating 140,000 votes during the online gallery exhibition.

The contest drew over 500 original submissions from a diverse pool of writers, including first-time poets, entire classrooms, and a contributor as young as seven years of age. The reach extended far beyond city limits, with entries arriving from 19 states and eight countries, featuring poems written in Spanish, English, French, and Creole.

Michael J. Ivory, Jr.’s poem, “Magic City”, earned both top honors from the contest’s judges, and the highest number of public votes. Green Space Miami provided their windows as a canvas for O’Miami’s Civic Publishing initiative, featuring lines from Michael’s winning poem.

Primal Ensemble presents a live sound activation of Julia Zurilla’s immersive installation ‘Tide of Memory’ at Green Space Miami. Through improvisation with percussion, synthesizers, and acoustic instruments, the ensemble creates a sonic landscape that evokes meditative resonances, like the sound of the sea or the wind, dialoguing with the projected imagery and the material qualities of the space.

During the performance, the gallery transforms into an environment of listening and contemplation where image, sound, and presence intertwine in real time. Visitors are invited to inhabit the installation from within and are welcome to bring their own yoga mat to immerse themselves in the experience.

March 21, 7pm, Green Space Miami. Bring your yoga mat.

Jason Aponte , Hurricane Party, 2025
Water-soluble oils on stretched canvas. 5.2ft x 4ft.

This painting, typical of my work, mixes moments of inverse realities and visually creates a sense of controlled chaos. In this painting, my family is enjoying a summer pool party in Miami but with overlaid imagery of hurricane aftermath. We are enjoying Jack Daniels and Puerto Rican food, all the while waters rise, forcing a woman to wade through with her food supplies and a man using his canoe to get to his home. In the past, our family has had to endure the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Our neighborhood was “ground zero” and we had to leave our home and rebuild. The takeaway is that life continues.

This painting talks to the reality of living through chaos and coming out on the back end. There is hope. We can get through the most intense moments of humanity and come out in the end triumphant.

Born in 1976 on an Air Force base in Homestead, FL, Jason Aponte grew up surrounded by both military tradition and creative influence. His grandmother, Iris, a clothing designer, sparked his early fascination with art, playing in her fashion studio in Miami Beach. He spent his childhood filling sketchbooks—a practice he continues today. Jason earned a Bachelor’s degree in Illustration from Ringling School of Art and Design in 2002, graduating with high honors.

After honing his craft in Boston’s Vernon Street Studios while working as an ophthalmic technician, he returned to Miami in 2009. He is currently an artist-in-residence at the Bakehouse Art Complex, with numerous solo and group exhibitions across the U.S. His work has been recognized with a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 2016 and funding from the City of Miami Beach in 2021 to create a new work.
Jason’s art explores the tension between destruction and renewal, drawing inspiration from apocalyptic narratives and nature’s resilience. His paintings and drawings exist between dreams and reality, where collapse gives way to transformation. Through his work, he examines survival, adaptation, and the fragile balance between human impact and the natural world.

Kandi & Katie Stirman , Beautiful Door, 2025
Rope, yarn, aluminum ring. 6 feet diameter x 10 feet height.

In New Atlantis, a city both seductive and doomed, the Beautiful Door becomes a temple of allure and defiance. A suspended portal inviting everyone to step inside, confronting the eroticism of the female form. The work thrives in contradiction; sacred yet provocative, intimate yet monumental. It honors the feminine force that empowers women, “accepting all donations” with unapologetic power. As Miami slips towards the sea, this piece stands as a totem celebrating power, vulnerability, eroticism and sanctuary - honoring the female body, not as an object, but as a threshold.

Born in Long Beach, NY, and raised in Miami Beach, Kandi Stirman discovered her creative voice early, mastering macramé as a teenager and weaving it into her father’s rope business. Alongside her husband, artist and visionary Rollin Stirman, she later transformed Miami Cordage into a certified rope manufacturer, laying the groundwork for a unique dialogue between craft, industry, and art.

Kandi’s artistic career came into full focus in 2016, when she became a studio mate with her niece, artist Sara Kaplan, in Miami’s Little Haiti. With Rollin’s engineering guidance, she completed her first major commission: a 100-foot rope sculpture at the Hotel Marseilles in South Beach, a work that remains on view.

In 2017, Kandi began collaborating with her daughter, Katie Stirman. Drawing on her extensive background in theater and creative engineering, Katie brings a dynamic counterpart to Kandi’s vision. Together, they create monumental rope-based sculptures that blend material innovation with poetic form. Their works are featured in prominent public and private spaces across Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, with clients including Windstar Cruise Lines, The Regatta Grove, The Wharf Miami, The Wharf Ft. Lauderdale, The Ray Hotel, and numerous private collections.

Alan David Mejia, known as AlanDavid
Trapt, 2025
Crab trap, barnacles, uncut original rigging rope, shipping crate (all reclaimed), epoxy, adhesive, aerosol rubber coating, screws, nylon. 68 x 35.5 inches.

Created from objects salvaged from the ocean, ‘Trapt’ contains multiple parallels to life and art in Miami. Items that would have been sent to landfill become a conversation piece, continuing on a new journey of hope, connection, and meaning.

Miami has a century-old relationship with the indigenous stone crab and crab traps can be found throughout South Florida waterways. ‘Trapt’ is created from a single “ghost trap” – one that was lost and washed ashore in the Everglades. The trap’s rigging line is one piece and uncut, frayed ends of the rope branching out to darkness and light.

The “face” image resembles an Aztec God and reminds us that regardless of how powerful an empire may be, it eventually falls. With overdevelopment and buildings sinking in the sand, our beloved city is no different.

AlanDavid is a Miami-based artist known for transforming reclaimed objects and discarded materials into works of art. Born in Miami Beach, raised in Westchester, now residing in Homestead, Alan’s work is rooted in themes of renewal, environmental awareness, urban sprawl and decay, and self-reflection. Challenges conventional ideas of beauty and waste, he scavenges streets, beaches, mangroves, alleys, backroads and waterways. Blurring the lines between trash and treasure, his work recognizes the resilience of materials and people, the concept of waste, and overlooked beauty.

The constant grind of South Florida life can also be seen in his work, reminding us of the difficulty of leaving a place that is no longer what it once was, and the struggle to survive in a city whose growth, excess, and cost of living far exceeds other places. His bold compositions reflect the vibrancy, frequency, and grit of Miami, drawing influence from street culture, oceanic and Caribbean aesthetics, and the ongoing tension between the development and diminishing natural order of our landscape.

Cristina Maingrette , ‘Sou Teras’
NEW ATLANTIS, Green Space Miami

Sou Teras, meaning “on the terrace” in Haitian Creole, transcends a mere physical location. It symbolizes a living tradition, a cultural ritual rooted in connection, relaxation, and community. Whether on a sidewalk, a makeshift seat, or an actual terrace, these gatherings transform ordinary public spaces into vibrant hubs of conversation, music, games, and storytelling.

Cristina Maingrette is a Haitian artist based in Miami whose practice is deeply rooted in the vibrant artistic traditions of her homeland. Growing up immersed in Haiti’s rich cultural landscape, she drew inspiration from the artistry and craftsmanship woven into everyday life.

Cristina’s artistic journey began with illustration, using ink on paper as a medium to facilitate a meditative state of creativity. This practice continues to anchor her work, offering clarity and calm while opening pathways to new explorations.

Guided by curiosity and a spirit of experimentation, Cristina explores a variety of mediums including clothing design, painting, and printmaking. Yet she consistently returns to the simplicity and depth of ink and paper, finding endless possibilities in its timelessness.

Through her work, Cristina bridges the heritage of Haitian artistry with contemporary approaches, creating a dialogue that resonates across cultures and audiences.

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is honored to announce a significant gift from the Green Family Foundation in support of the Caribbean Cultural Institute (CCI), a program aimed at advancing the study of Caribbean art while providing opportunities for exchange and collaboration across the region and its diasporic communities. The gift creates new collaborations with The Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center at Florida International University FIU), and Green Space Miami.

This multi-year gift establishes new collaborative pathways with FIU and Green Space Miami, GFF’s platform for supporting Miami artists, co-founded by Dr. Kimberly Green and Michelangelo Bendandi. Through this partnership, CCI Fellows will gain access to FIU’s extensive Caribbean and Latin American research collections, archives, and libraries. FIU will also publish fellows’ research, expanding its reach across academic and international audiences.

“The Green Family Foundation has always championed access, equity, and cultural exchange,” said Dr. Kimberly Green, President of GFF. “Since 1991, GFF—founded by Ambassador Steven J. Green and Dorothea Green—has been committed to education in Miami-Dade County. Supporting CCI means investing directly in the next generation of thinkers, scholars, and artists shaping our future.”

The gift will also support paid undergraduate internships for FIU students, connecting emerging scholars to CCI’s research and curatorial initiatives. Green Space Miami will additionally host co-programmed public forums, exhibitions, and annual gatherings that bring together artists, advocates, creatives, and educators from across the Caribbean and Miami-Dade County.
