I have a beautiful, cheerful and very friendly daughter in law born in Nicaragua. I admire her love of Nicaragua specially her Granada. I come from a city in Cuba with very similar characteristics. It stands out for its well-preserved architecture, which fuses Colonial, Neoclassical, and Baroque styles. The historic center showcases colorful houses featuring inner courtyards, high ceilings, wrought-iron balconies, and large entrance gates, reflecting a strong Spanish influence. Unfortunately I never go to Cuba. And some of you may know why.
I have admiration for her and her families’ love of their native country. And I appreciate that it is being instilled in my granddaughters. I am particularly very knowledgeable of my own roots and I mind very much those from my family that were here before me…my ancestors. Who they were? I researched that and have been lucky enough to go back to the 1800’s in Camaguey, Cuba on the internet including to my great great grandparents. Whatever small story I can leave for my granddaughters I will try. You see, we can never or should never lose who we are, the respect and culture birthed and cultivated from one generation to another. I have experienced noticeable resentments for relaying stories from my past, too bad if you have non to tell.
When I decided to paint these small renderings for Gil I researched the city of Granada and took some pictures in order to get a closer idea for my renderings, a gift to her. They now sit on floating frames to welcome the rest of the family to this wonderful loving home. ❤️
