Here are a few rare Miami Graffiti images from the 1980s that we pulled from the archive. From streets to rooftops to the inside of a swimming pool, these images showcase the different styles and colors that surrounded the City of Miami. Today many of these artists are exhibiting in museums, painting public murals, designing campaigns for brands, while a few are no longer with us. Shout out to those featured including DK, Seel, Hek (Loveism), Seam, STV, ATBO, 7UP and the photographers that shared these great images.

What happens when graffiti writers stop following the “rules?” Anti-style graffiti embraces distortion, awkward letterforms, illegibility, drips, rough lines, and unconventional compositions. Instead of chasing technical perfection, anti-style challenges the idea of what graffiti is supposed to look like.

Emerging prominently from European graffiti scenes in the 1990s and beyond, anti-style became a way for writers to reject traditional lettering conventions and push graffiti into new, experimental territory. Because sometimes, the most interesting style is the one that breaks all the rules. Here’s a few examples of some well known anti-style writers.

In this episode we sit down with graffiti writer JEL who began writing graffiti as a kid in the late 1980s and became an original member of Ink Heads Crew, one of Miami’s influential graffiti crews.

For Miami graffiti history, Jel is significant because his work connects the city’s early graffiti movement to its contemporary art scene. His practice has continued to evolve from illegal street writing into a sophisticated studio practice without losing that connection to the streets. He is best known for taking the visual language of graffiti, buffing, and urban erasure and transforming it into contemporary painting.
