April is the month of Mona Lisa’s Daughter. Three years ago, on April 28, this painting took over Times Square in New York City. Since then, its journey has continued through several exhibitions in Miami, most recently this past December, where it was shown alongside a work by Pablo Picasso, and featured in editorial contexts such as Vogue.
This is one of the works closest to me, and it may soon begin a new chapter that I’ll be announcing shortly.
Technique
The painting is oil on canvas and represents the daughter of the Mona Lisa as I imagine her.
Story
Several years ago, I started researching the Mona Lisa and discovered, to my surprise, that Lisa del Giocondo (the woman depict) had a child who was stillborn.
That fact stayed with me. It led me to create this painting as if that daughter had lived.
It’s a tribute to something deeply personal and universal at the same time, but also to the contrast between two forces: the mother’s life, made eternal through art, and the daughter’s death, quiet and profoundly human.
