I find tree removals very feminine. This one recently was on Key Biscayne when the city had cut a large hollow branch from a tree and in the process cut a giant hive into three pieces. My friend Kerstin was called by the city to do a live removal. I have to hand it to both Kerstin and Key Biscayne as this is the only local Miami municipality to call a live bee remover and beekeeper first for hive removal jobs on city land. Big thank you to NaMa 🌿 for calling me on Friday morning to help with this tree cavity removal. So many generations of bee colonies have lived here over the years. This hive has been there only a few months though. They are very healthy and will do fine with the move. Always a great day when people insist on working with real beekeepers and not exterminators.

Transitioning our bees at Patch of Heaven Sanctuary to the Primal Bee is a process. The bees start fresh with new comb building for the queen to lay eggs and food storage to feed them (pollen and nectar from flowers). It’s a very healthy process for them overall, but they do need to be fed heavily during the transition. We feed them thick sugar syrup until the brood box has a good amount of stores. August is a slim month for natural nectar but come September we have the fall flow of honey here in South Florida so they can sustain themselves. This new hyper-insulated hivestyle makes it much easier for them to spend energy collecting nectar rather than water to air condition overheating hives. We love it 😊

I’m having too much fun teaching about the Primal Bee Hives Primal Bee to other Beekeeper at Patch Of Heaven sanctuary Patch of Heaven Sanctuary. It’s really fun seeing the bees draw out the comb so well and having a really healthy situation in these new hives.

I post a lot about my new Primal Bee hives and that’s because I’m obsessed. I researched and searched for an extra insulated and thermodynamically secure hive style for our tropical bees and I found them in Europe. Thank you to Primal Bee who makes these, as Primal Bee is fabulous for bees. I was very hopeful going in and now that the bees have been in them for a big chunk of the Miami summer, I’m very happy and impressed. The bees here at Patch of Heaven Sanctuary are all doing well, every single one of the 20 hives are successful. We will keep you all updated on the difference in honey storage with our fall flow. It never fails to pull at my heart when a baby bee emerges from her cocooned cell. She works so hard to get out of there to join her hive by chewing and hoisting herself up and out. No one helps her to be born in that moment, but she was pampered completely as a larva. Nurse bees feed larval bees 300-700 times a day or every 2-5 minutes depending on the needs and age of the larva. If fed well, and if she’s free of varroa mites and viruses, she has all the capacity she needs to emerge successfully. Amazing, each and every one. Bee facts are great but isn’t she so cute? 🥰🐝👍
